Xbox Arcade Volume 1 Unplugged is a collection of 6 of the finest games available for download in the first year or so off Xbox live. Since the evolution of online gaming and video game companies selling products for download, a wave of games have been released by a range of publishers that are only available as downloads. This disc is intended for those who perhaps don't have access to the online gaming stores and/or prefer the safety and longevity of a game on disc.
This collection is actually far cheaper nowadays than downloading the games and second hand and ebay prices are so low for this its worth getting this even if only 2 or 3 of the games appeal.
The games on the disc are -
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
Where it all began really. After the success of this game as a side attraction of the PGR series it has grown into a franchise of its own and whilst the sequel and Wii version are far better this is still a very enjoyable title. Its very retro and will please shooter fans of games like Gradius etc. Its addictive, competitive and tough and involves you using your control sticks to fire, dodge, weave and survive in a box with ever increasing enemies. Classic game. 8/10
May be familiar to some from its popularity on the PC. It's a puzzle game that involves twisting and turning blocks to make patters and line up objects whilst playing against the clock. Its addictive and gets tough but its true home is on the PC as the controls don't respond too well and it impacts you big time on later levels. 6/10
Outpost Kaloki X
A tedious strategy game involving basically constructing a power station with shops, services etc. For an Arcade title its far too complex, far too slow and far too long. Its dull even for strategy fans. 3/10
Self explanatory. Backgammon is an extremely fun and traditional board game that involves moving checkers around to bring your checkers "home". The game has a tutorial so you can learnt o play and with an online mode, good controls, camera support and multiplayer it can be very fun. Hard to rate this as it depends on whether you like backgammon - 7/10
Platformer-come-puzzler which involvers you controlling Wiki to collect objects within time frames etc. Lots of levels, a decent challenge and a fun game all round. 7/10
Texas Hold 'Em Poker
This version of Poker to this day is still immensely popular on Xbox Live. The single player has challenges, ongoing bank rolls and tournaments but if you have bought this disc because you haven't got xbox Live then you are really missing out as it will get boring fast. Poker against non humans is pointless so the inclusions of this game on this disc is a bit bizarre. Nevertheless it deserves its place as along with Geo Wars its certainly one of Lives most popular games
All in all the disc can give you hours of fun. Most of the games are versions of card games, board games and PC games you might be familiar with and with Outpost Kaloki being so tedious then it leaves you with two original games to explore. For the prices its worth it and for some, who enjoy Poker and Backgammon, there could be a lot more to get out of this disc.
Worth it if you can pick it up cheap!

Just a quick one, this disc has caused me big problems in the past. I went through two of these and took them both back to Gamestation, after a bit of internet research there appears to be a bit of a problem with this and the New XBOX Experience. (NXE) I just couldn't get this to work, now, if you're connected to XBOX Live the NXE is a mandatory download so this could be a problem for you too.
In terms of what's included on the disc the game list isn't great considering the gems on Microsoft's Arcade some of the choices seem odd in spite of the presence of the excellent Geometry Wars.
The idea itself is very good and it's a shame that Microsoft haven't adopted the idea and made more Arcade compilations, maybe they could have fighting and puzzle and shooter ones. I guess it wouldn't make as good business sense though as Microsoft would lose control over pricing.
Arcade Unplugged Volume 1 brings you a selection of games from Xbox Live which are all contained within one disc so you can play them without having Xbox Live or you can download the games from disc on to your Xbox Hard Drive and then not have to worry about using the disc in the future (although this does take up around 4gb of space).
It works out much cheaper to buy the games on this disc than to download them with Xbox Live Gamer Points and as I picked up a brand new copy of this game for around £8.00 (even cheaper on Ebay now) I was very pleased with myself.
The games on the disc are as follows:
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved - This is a very old fashioned game and will be quite nostalgic for some people as you shoot your way through space. There are a few different versions of the game available on this disc including "retro" and "evolved" and this is quite a fun game although I don't appear to be very good at it unlike my other half who is rocking the leader board right now in our house!
Wik: Fable of Souls - There are over 120 levels on this game and you will have to use your characters tongue to work your way through them collection bugs, honey and completely miscellaneous timed challenges. I thoroughly enjoy this game and it's one that I've mastered quite well being able to get a fair few levels in and I think I am on around level 50 at the moment but I'm getting there slowly but surely!
Bejeweled 2 - This game is one that some people may already know the name of because it's also available in various other forms such as PC and online on Facebook. You have to group gems in 3 or more of the same gem to remove them from the grid and as the game progresses there are various other things that you have to try and complete as well. This game is very addictive and I could happily sit on the XBox playing this for a whole afternoon.
Outpost Kaloki X - This is a strategy game in which you have to build and maintain a power station with miscellaneous shops & services. This game is quite complex and the early decisions that you make will shape whether you win the game or not. This is quite a fun game but it doesn't have much time from me because I get bored of it quite easily and it becomes too monotonous.
Hardwood Backgammon - This is the classic game of backgammon and you can play online, against a friend at home or just on your own. I never play this game so can't give much experience on this one, sorry.
Texas Hold 'Em Poker - Here you start with a set amount of money and can play online with Xbox Live, complete scenarios or simply play against the computer to try and build up your money. This is by far my favourite game on this disc and the one that I play pretty much everyday I am near the XBox.
There are also some other demos on this disc but I never play any of these so I'm not able to comment much on these. One of the main reasons that I play the above games is because 5 of them (except backgammon) help me to earn gamer points and I am trying to get my score a little higher ready for when we get broadband at my fiancé Tom's house and can go on XBox Live.
This game is great value for money and I thoroughly enjoy the majority of the games, I would definitely recommend purchasing this even if it's just for the poker alone as it's currently available for around £8.00 from shopto.net or on Ebay for around £5.00 + postage. I am rating the game 4/5 as the majority of the games here are great.
Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged is a disk that contains six Xbox Live Arcade titles. The disk itself is very easy to use, no installation is required, the game disk is simply inserted in the disk draw and the player is routed directly to the Arcade menu to pick which game they want to play. It should be noted that the disk is always required to play the games, as they cannot be copied or stored onto another storage device.
These games featured on the disk are:
-Geometry Wars 9/10
-Texas Hold 'Em Poker 7/10
-Bejewelled 2 8/10
-Wik Fable of Souls 8/10
-Outpost Kaloki X 5/10
-Hardwood Backgammon 4/10
(There are also some trial games featured on the disk, but they aren't complete versions, meaning they don't have access to all the levels or any of the achievements and leaderboards.)
The first four of the games are very good titles, and despite the age of the games on here, they are still some of the best titles that are available online. The game disk itself is very good value, and it does in fact save money as opposed to downloading them online, and that is without including the one month free Xbox Live Subscription that comes with it.
There is a good range of games on here, ranging from puzzle games such as Bejewelled to shooters like Geometry Wars, and all of the games are suitable for all of the family. Needless to say that the graphics and sound on all of these games are great, which applies to almost all of the Xbox Live Arcade titles, and so they are very playable. The online modes of Texas Hold 'em Poker is very good, and there is also online support for Hardwood Backgammon, although last time I checked the servers were almost empty.
Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged is a collection of arcade games for the Microsoft Xbox 360 games console.
On this disk you will get Geometry Wars, Texas Hold em, Outpost kaloki x, Wik fable of souls, Hardwood Backgammon and Bejewelled 2.
Geometry was is an excellent shooting game, Texas hold em is a fun poker game, Outpost Kaloki X is a fun strategy game where you set up an empire in space, Wik is a fun puzzle game, Hardwood Backgammon is a backgammon game, Bejewelled 2 is a fun gem matching game.
There is something for all tastes here, this disk is primarily for people who do not have access to Xbox live, as if you do you can download the ones you like.
Fortunately for those of you who do not have Xbox live the selection here is pretty good, there is not really a bad game.
You can get this collection for around £15.00 and it is good for people who are not connected to Xbox live.
for just under £20 you could buy this new, i have seen this retail in game stores second hand for £6 and i must say if you can get it this cheap then this product is certainly worth it. For microsoft points you are able to purchase games on the xbox live marketplace, yeah this is a great idea but most of the games retail at arround 800 MSpoints, which in real money is about £6. i certainly wouldnt pay six pounds for a game which is bundled in this disk, on the disk comes 6 arcade games all fully unlocked so you can get that all important gamerscore off them. I certainly would recomend this as arcade games are fun and can be more relaxing than playing halo or call of duty for hours, if you can find this product cheap in a store then i would certainly go for it :D
