I briefly borrowed this game from a friend before I bought this game as I was skint and couldn't afford any new games for a good while; Once I got my hands on some cash Batman Arkham Asylum was literally the first thing I purchased and I've not regretted it since.
Although some may argue that the graphics are not the most important part of a game but for someone like me who enjoys realistic, crisp looking games that offer high definition detail and life like characterization - this game did it for me. There was a great amount of detail in the smallest features, every ounce of the game had extraordinary amounts of detail and didn't disappoint visually.
I enjoyed the prospect of battling more than one "bad guy" in the game as it gave you a multitude of story lines that eventually intertwined into one which gives you a variety of missions and tasks to achieve and therefore doesn't leave you feeling drained by focusing on just the one. You encounter a number of characters such as the Joker, poison ivy, killer croc, harley quinn and the scarecrow and you have a number of gadgets available to help you with your missions such at the bat claw and explosive gel - however you do not start the game with all of your gadgets straight away, you must make your way through the levels in order to retrieve them from oracle or batman's family butler and assistant Alfred pennyworth.
The game won an award for game of the year and has now been classed as an xbox 360 classic, all within good reason as the game was beautifully put together and the story line was interesting and rather dark at some points; such as the scarecrow missions which are rather macabre and twisted due to scarecrows fear serum, these parts of the game are not frequent but they do involve a lot of accuracy and paying attention to your surroundings.
Each 'baddie' has different ways to be defeated and if you don't beat them straight away, you always get the opportunity to start over again rather than repeating an entire chapter of the game. Also you are required to fight a lot of escaped prisoners who will willingly fight you on behalf of all of the bad guys as you are a threat to their freedom and you are also the person who put them all behind bars. A lot of these guys are easy to take down once you familiarize yourself with appropriate fighting techniques and how to defend yourself. As always batman does not kill his opponents but leaves them unconscious on the floor.
There is also "detective mode" available, where you are able to detect enemies behind walls and objects and see whether they are armed and dangerous or not so you know just exactly what you're up against. Although don't keep detective mode on as it can often ruin the games overall appearance and aid you too much in your missions, however it's always personal preference so if you prefer to keep detective mode on, feel free to do so.
You also are given the task of finding riddler clues, trophies, maps and patient interview tapes. Don't worry if you don't collect them during your main missions you can go back to them just like I did at the end of the game and earn yourself a couple of achievements on the way. All in all an absolutely fantastic game that will consume a lot of your time and give you hours of entertainment.
