Review:-
The game itself is like no other previous Burnout game, this one is completly free from set levels. Instead of doing a race or crash style event and moving on, this time you drive around the huge area of Paradise City (lovingly played in by Guns N Roses at the title screen). To play events you go to traffic lights and initiate it via a button sequence, the events available are:-
Race - standard race, one place to another, get there first or loose.
Road Rage - take out a pre-set amount of cars in the time limit without being trashed yourself
Marked Man - cars chase you trying to wipe you out, avoid or take them out to get to your target before they destroy you
Stunt Run - jump, spin, boost and drift your way through the city finding places to do stunts and get the pre-set score or more before the timer runs out
Burning Route - one per car, get the right car and find that cars burning route. Then race through the route to the end (like a big, one person time trial) within the time to unlock a special edition of that car (i.e. sports model)
You start with one car at the junk yard that you need to repair at a repair station, which is simply a case of driving through it and then by completing events you unlock new cars on to the road which are then racing around in the city....somewhere. As you drive around you'll suddenly see the car and after taking it out (into another car, barrier, etc) it'll be available at your junk yard for you to choose. You are able to stop at gas station for a boost or paint shop to respray your ride. Speed can be built up through stunts and through dangerous driving i.e. on the wrong side of the road, swerving to avoid a car ('near miss') to help you win races.
The overall idea is to have fun and complete the events that get gradually more challenging, whilst winning enough events to get your licence upgraded to get you more cars etc.
Summary:-
The game is fast paced and the stunning camera quick replays as you trash someones ride are breath taking. The city is huge and the events are varied, if not sometimes a bit tedious. The way you unlock other cars is nice and the free-roam of the city is a unique and interesting idea. The graphics are as ever top notch and though i have not tried it online yet, it is pegged as being as much fun online as offline, its basically street racing....legally!
If you've played the other Burnouts then you must try this one, bags of playbackability as well as nice hidden gems such as the race to smash through all 400 (according to maholo.com) gates and all 60 billboards (according to playfire.com) and collect all the cars and their variations.
Fun with friends online i'm sure, though it would have been better to include multiplayer offline also (the only reason this is a 4-star)
Burnout Paradise with multiplayer offline would = 5 star
So close EA so close, still a stunning game!
Summary: great game, loads of fun in single player but just lacking the multiplayer
