“ Manufacturer: The Behemoth / Genre: Action / Release Date: 2008 „
Castle Crashers is a side-scrolling beat 'em up available via Xbox Live Arcade.set in a cartoon fantasy world.
You play one of four knights (more character choices are available as you progress) charged with rescuing some princesses that an evil wizard has captured. It's hackneyed fantasy but it's treated with such affection and humour that I didn't notice.
The gameplay is simplistic but fun. You move around on a big map to advance through the levels, and once a level is chosen you hack your way to the end of it using a combination of combat combos, magic and special weapons. It's lots of fun with more than one player, and the variety of levels, enemies and unique environmental challenges keeps the admittedly simplistic gameplay interesting.
You can level up your character, choosing whether to focus on magic, combat and speed. You also collect animal companions that give you bonuses and extra powers.
The graphics and design are fantastic, being reminiscent of the strong lines and vivid colours prevalent in the award-winning Genndy Tartakovsky/Craig McCracken cartoons. This is complemented by some great tunes, which vary from the adrenaline-pumping to the downright silly.
You may find that single-player gets a little old after the first playthrough, you can usually still find players online. It's best played when you've got some friends round and you've got some beers in. The charmingly retarded storyline and aesthetic are perfectly suited for a night's drinking.
In my opinion the award for best arcade game goes to...
If you're unsure of what Castle Crashers is or you haven't yet tried this amazing arcade game, no need to worry as I'm about to cover all the reasons why you should definitely spare 1200MSP (Microsoft points) and purchase this fantastic game.
The game is created by the amazing creators who stop at nothing to make their games even more insane than the next, The Behemoth.
You may notice the name from an earlier game named Alien Hominid which was a shooter game with a few twists to it. For one, there were a ton of power-ups to collect which could change your laser gun into a flamethrower, ice-gun and many more. However, enough of that and onto Castle Crashers!
Castle Crashers is based through many different levels which eventually link together as a story, you play as one of four knights to begin with, each having his own special element (Ice, fire, earth, lightning). The main story behind the game is that each princess has been kidnapped by a different type of enemy. Your main objective is to rescue each princess one by one, fighting your way through countless enemies and different levels.
As you continue through the game you can unlock pets, each pet has its own ability to help you through your missions. For example, the owl will find all hidden items which may be under grass or even behind trees which you'd never think twice about looking behind.
The games difficulty increases as you fight your way through each level, the terrain constantly changing and the enemies becoming a little bit more mad each time around.
Once the game has been completed with a character you can then unlock a new character to play as, each unlock is based on whichever character you unlock the game with. Nearly all the enemies can be unlocked, even the ninja! (Yes that's my favourite).
The sound in the game is fantastic, from the effects to the exciting music which makes each level just that little bit more fun. My personal favourite is definetly the pirate-ninja level in which you have to defeat tons of ninjas on a pirate ship only to be made more outstanding by the fast-paced music in the background!
The game also has two DLC packs, both of which I have purchased and are definitely worth it. The first pack allows you to play as the king (who has an insane healing ability, very useful in arena/PVP combat).
Anyhow enough of that, go purchase this game right now!
Castle Crashers is the folow up to developer, The Behemoth's Alien Hominid which was originally released for the XBOX and is now also available on XBOX Live Arcade with Castle Crashers - their latest offering. The game has obvious similarities to Alien Hominid like in its art direction and sense of humour but mercifully, Castle Crashers doesn't have the inpenetrable difficulty level of Hominid that prevented me from getting past the first level in that one..
As I mentioned, Castle Crashers is a downloadable only game, available through XBOX Live in their Live Arcade store, the online element of Microsoft's XBOX 360 console. I heard murmurings a while ago that the game might be heading to the PlayStation Network but as far as i'm aware is only available on 360 just now.
The game is a side scrolling beat-em-up in a similar vein to Golden Axe or Streets of Rage, a very popular genre in its day but comparatively neglected today which helps to explain its huge sales success and why at the time of purchase it was the highest rated game on XBOX Live Arcade. The game was released in the summer of 2008 as part of their Summer of Arcade promotion alongside four other games which are meant to represent the best of the service and is something they repeated again in 2009 with another raft of top games like Trials HD and Shadow Complex.
On release the game was sold for 1200 Microsoft Points (the currency of XBOX Live) and depending on where you get your points from equates to somewhere between eight and ten pounds. Until quite recently this was the highest price for anything on the service so its sales success is even more impressive. Unfortunately for me, like so many other games on XBLA, Castle Crashers was recently reduced to 560 points in a Christmas promotion for Gold subscribers but this seems to be the price you pay if you want to play a game upon first release.
As I mentioned before, the game is an obvious tribute to traditional side scrolling fighters and when broken down can be seen to just be a button bashing run through an onslaught of enemies but it's what The Behemoth have added to this game that makes Castle Crashers a step forward for the genre. The game has a a lovely and varied hand-drawn art style which is beautiful if perhaps not quite as charming as something like Paper Mario or the Wind Waker which share a similar art direction. The world of the game is accessed through a hub map like Super Mario World did twenty years ago and keeps up the level of references to retro games.
The game plays on generic conventions to hilarious effect such as the idea of the end-of-level boss. At the end of the first stage we are confronted by a huge beast snarling at you in front of a large portcullis only for the gate to be bashed open by a larger boss and squashing the smaller foe underneath. These little touches are present throughout the game and as a seasoned gamer its great when you spot one and recognise the influence and it's obvious that the developers are gamers who love games too.
There is no real story to speak of here, these kind of games aren't famous for it, I remember Double Dragon being built on your girlfriend getting kidnapped and that's it. Like that game and every Mario game ever, the goal is to free a princess (four in fact) at different corners of the map and there's no story here to get in the way of the action which is very satisfying and has added depth by way of combos and weapons that can be purchased with the gold coins that are left after you kill an enemy.
Like most of these games, Castle Crashers can be run through in just a few hours but the game rewards additional playthroughs with unlockable chracters and an experience system with your 'XP' count gradually rising through all your battles. Again like most of these games, Castle Crashers really comes to life in multiplayer and Castle Crashers supports both online and local four player sessions.
Castle Crashers is a very addictive game which is easily accessible for anyone to play but has enough depth for the hardened player to get enough out of it too. It might not be my personal favourite game on Live Arcade but as a huge fan of this kind of game in general it's so good to see it again and in such an accomplished form.
Possibley the greatest and most fun game i have ever played.
I completely enjoyed this game and found my self constently playing this every day untill it was finished.
This is more of a cartoon style game so the graphics are just like a very very good cartoon to be put simply.
Although i do think some of the characters look pretty Kewl!!!
You will find that the music and sound is good quality but it is also very catchy and you may find your self humming it quite alot.
This isnt just a quick fix game and then its finished....there are quite alot of levels and 'bosses' to complete, and after that you can even play the game but in the unlocked extream hard version!
Aswell as that there are sub games within the game you can play.
There is the availablity of up to 4 people that can play, and you can do online playing.
There is also a bit of a comedy side to this game (the raindear that moves away from the monster but not by running...some of you will know what i mean).
I believe that this is a fun game for all ages.
And i would definately urge people to give it a go, i had ALOT of fun with it.
I'm not normally a gamer and I don't really know what makes a good game but I know I enjoyed this. Castle Crashers is arcade game that costs 1600 points.
Castle Crashers is a side-scrolling game with elements of RPG (role-playing game) in it. It has fairly simple game play which is easy to get the hang of. It is hack and slash. You can also use magic which is pretty handy and fun to use. You can have up to four people on the screen playing at once. You can also have a cute little animal following you around helping you to kill enemies and beat bosses. There are 26 animals. You can buy them in shops and you can find them in some parts of levels. Each animal does something different to help you out.
There are four characters at the beginning of the game (then you can unlock more) for you to choose from. Each has a different magic attack. After you have selected the character you want you then go on to the map to choose a level. The more you fight and kill enemies the more experience points you earn. When you earn enough experience points you level up. When you level up you get a chance to increase one of your skills (strength, magic, defence or ability). Each player has a health meter, if it is drained by enemies your character falls in battle, if you are playing alone you start from the beginning of the level, if you are playing with someone else they can be revived. If they don't revive you in time you may try to finish the level by yourself and your partner or partners will come back in the next level.
This is a cartoon style game. It has very random and funny bosses like a giant corn who throws popcorn but the bosses still can be quite difficult to defeat. This game, like any other is more fun to play with more people but it is still fun with one person.
You can play Castle crashers live as well. There are also two other game modes which you can play online or offline (An Arena mode and an "All You Can Quaff" mode). The arena mode is similar to the arenas in the main game in which you try to survive several waves of enemies or where you fight each other. The "All You Can Quaff" mode is where you eat as much as you can by button-mashing and tapping as fast as you can.
Live mode isn't that fun on the main game but it is okay on the other two modes however it is really hard to find someone to play online with you.
This game is very long for an arcade game and it is also very fun. There is also an DLC available for this games and there are some more coming out. Even if your not an gamer like me you should definitely give it a try!
Simply amazing, full of energy, bright vibrant backgrounds and most of all some of the best music i have ever laid witness to hearing. (BEST DOWNLOAD EVER)
Catsle crashers is a fairly straight forward side scrolling RPG it has numerous unlockable characters obtained through different playthroughs and is based around the adventure of the four brave Knights (Blue, Orange, Green, Red) and their relentless journey to reclaim the taken daughters of the king which all corresbondingly match the colours of the knights. Each Knight has a unique type of magic and can be used stratigicly or just spammed for a laugh. The Storyline is fairly straight forward evil wizard steals the Kings magic obelisk to make him self more powerful and along the way you have to fight his henchmen who have kept the kings daughters for themselves. The Adventure ponders through two sides of a map one contains woods and industrial castles and the other an arabian desert and ice world which are both linked with an extreme ninja-pirate filled boat ride. Overall it is a very simple stroryline and to be honest is progressed so fluently and also due to it being an arcade game it doesnt take ages getting into.. it's one of those pick up and play instantly games which leads to me giving the storyline an overall 10/10 because never the less it might not be unique but it sure is fun.
Gameplay is fairly straight forward hack and slash with the occaisonal magic power and thats all there is to it. Boss battles are simple but when on insane mode require tactics, and the amount of enemies on the screen at once is always in proportion with the amount of player characters taking part (so there is no A.I swarming). The Characters move without buggyness and every movement is artiscly flawless. Simply aweasome. 10/10 nothing else needs to be said.
Graphics there are no irregularities or bugs, everything moves at a smooth fps and there are no gaps in the environment, The backgrounds only repeat like once in everylevel and are so unique you may have a hard time keeping your eyes on the battle. The graphics are perfect all the shadings and colour are spot on 10/10
Sound is where this game won my heart, each level has a kind of novility about it with the upbeat rythum and major (happy sounding) chords but yet adds such a sinister tone to the adventure and enemies. The music is simply amazing, i would recommend downloading the music off the newgrounds webiste because honestly i could just sit there with start pressed for hours. The sounds of striking, magic and swings of weapons are all dubbed to high quality and show off the games high quality control throughout. I give this game 10/10 for sound and music.
Castle crashers is xbox live enabled and local party enabled so you and four friends can either play online or offline together and just have a great time. There are two other game modes.
Arena which is pretty self explanatory, fight each other in various arena locations expierienced through story mode.
All you can Quaff, this fun mini game consists of you rapidly pressing buttons to eat food rather quickly, four players can play and the fastest wind (NO cheating with turbo controls)
Overall this game is just pretty amazing and i personally haven't found anything wrong with it, so i would recommend you go and buy it now because it is a hall of famer.
Sound and music 10/10
I don't think I've ever been so impressed with a downloadable game off Xbox Live!
It's fun, energetic, a great game to play with your friends too.
It's mainly a multi-player campaign than anything else, but it's not often you find a game where you can actually play with someone on the campaign, usually it's either multi-player OR solo mission, so this is a nice touch.
The characters are lively and cute to watch, and despite it only being cartoony, it's actually quite difficult to complete! The controls are extremely simple, very easy to pick up too.
I've played this game with a group of friends and found it very entertaining when you're trying to beat your friends to get the most points! Especially after a few drinks!
I don't think this game can really be faulted. It's cheap and cheerful, what more do you expect? Well done to whoever create this!
