I spent a while thinking how to start this review, and that I just couldn't figure it out. The reason for this is that I was I remember being 45 hours into the game and having only discovered 40% of the locations (that is a very rough guess, feel free to add or deduct 10% from that). Anyone familier with Morrowwind or Oblivion will realise just how... 'epic' this game is. Basically this is the perfect game for anyone with time on their hand, pick a random direction, walk that way & you can spend a good hour crossing a small portion of the map. Don't worry, you won't just be enjoying the glorious post-apocalyptic environment, there is plenty to fight, people to talk to and quests to undertake.
I suppose I should spend some time talking about the context of the game. It's set after a nuclear war, which lasted just a couple of hours. The history of this world follows that of our own, I realise that we haven't witnessed a nuclear fallout... yet, but the miniaturisation of technology never actually happened, so technology used a lot more power, draining resources faster, leading to, you guessed it... war!
The player, or 'lone wanderer', was lucky enough to be born in a vault. But soon enters into the vast wilderness, so enjoy the radiation free water while it lasts. From then on you have your main story line, but you can do whatever you want, move north, east, south or west, the choice is yours.
Like in a lot of games now, there is a moral system, you can be the saviour of the wasteland, or add to the misery, or a bit of both. You can do anything form capturing slaves, saving entire towns, to blowing them up with a nuclear bomb.
Fallout 3 is essentially a role playing game, based on a wide variety of stats, allowing you to play the game as you want. As a ninja who uses laser weapons, or just storming right into a super mutant with a rocket launcher. There is the option to fight in standard first person shooter mode, or a turn based mode called VATS.
There is no multiplayer mode, so if you love single player games (like myself) and have a spare couple of hundred hours on your hands, this game is for you.
Summary: I don't say game of the year often but... game of the year!
