Advantages: Excellent add-on to your existing game!
Disadvantages: A bit short.....
Point Lookout is just one of five possible downloadable packs available for the already massive Fallout 3 and can be purchased through Xbox Live for a large chunk of Microsoft points. Or, if you don't want to download each pack seperately of course, you could just do what I did and trade in your copy of Fallout 3 for The Game Of The Year Edition which contains all five as part of the package on a seperate disc!
This is the first downloadable mission pack I have played for Fallout 3 and, once installed, loads up a new message on your PipBoy; the device that tells you your current status, lists your inventory and lets you see which quests are currently available. This new message bids you check out a guy operating a ferryboat who has been selling some kind of weird fruit, obtained off the shores of Washington D.C from an island untouched by the bombs when they were dropped upon the Capital.
In exchange for a quite sizeable amount of Bottle Caps, the currency in Fallout, the ferryboat Captain agrees to ferry you across to Point Lookout but the haven you might have thought it would be is not all it seems....although no bombs were dropped, decades of inbreeding and radiation poisoning have had radical consequences.
The island is now a fetid swamp with strange new plants and lots of hill-billy yokels who are too retarded and mentally deficient to realise you mean them no harm and who attack on sight. An eccentric Ghoul lives out his days in a derelict mansion that he has made his own; another eccentric inhabitant seeks an ancient Relic, a tome that supposedly has necromantic powers and can control the dead and somewhere on the island walks a Chinese spy trying to infiltrate American shores if he hasn't already been caught!
These are just some of the mission strands available to you in this latest installment of adventures for your character. There are a couple of extra side missions also available or of course, you could just wander the island loading up with rare goodies to sell in the main game, killing anything that gets in your way. Once again, how you play it is entirely up to you!
There are new costume items available and new items of weaponry and one thing you will quickly learn is that your old weapons are of little use here so the first thing you should probably do is load up with a lever-rifle and an axe or two....preferably in good condition!
The game add-on itself, though short-lived, is surprisingly fun to play and not too dis-similar to the downloadable packs for Fable 2 but less annoyinfg and far more satisfying! I enjoyed playing Fallout 3 so much that to have new areas to explore is a dream come true! And this first downloadable pack that I have played is certainly worth investing a few quid in!
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this and think it is an excellent addition to an awesome game! What I make of the other downloadable packs remains to be seen.....
Summary: Your character discovers a remote, hidden island with new weapons and features!
