Fight Night Round 3 (Xbox 360)
Advantages: Great rendering, gimicks and extra`s
Disadvantages: gameplay is good but the harder shots ae too temperamental
This could have been it , the pinnacle of the boxing genre. But they fluffed it, why, one simple thing, but unfrtunately one of the most important things. Dont get me wrong , this game builds upon the other fight night games and adds in some extra`s.
The rendering is fantastic as youd expect on the xbox 360. Al the greats like ali, suger ray leanard and even joe calzaghe, ricky hattons (greats?) etc are all there. And as an extra you get the sweat and the blood flying off, its very lifelike. Even the bruises, the cuts look realistic in the floodlights.
As per usual you can choose tournament or exhibition (or arcade). In arcade ou can pick most weight divisions, and most great fighter from the 1950`s onwards and just great straight into a big fight. The career mode is where you can either take a great fighter from history and use that fighter as a tmeplate and move in a different career. Or a most do you build your own fighter. SO you can render your fighter with physical characterisitcs like brown hair, blue eyes, a big forehead or big chin, you can be stocky or wiry...it really is detailed. You also get to pick your skillset, your speed, strength , agility and stamina all come into play Then you pick your stance Orthodox or southpaw, and then your style within that (a new feature, like a lazy left arm dropped to get a quick jab). Once this is done you start off in the amateur leagues, typically you fight 10 fights here with a head guard on, then move to the pro`s. As you proceed through the ranks, you are challenged by fighters and you challenge, you go on to training camp where depending on your success here you can up your stats on stamina say and go into the fight thinking youve improved.
This is the problem, like all the other games it is very thought out how to throw punches and the joystick is very responsive. But unlike the PS2 the xbox controller makes it harder for you to throw some of the more complex punches like haymakers, I just couldnt do them as and when I wanted ! Other then that you have the same great post round cutmen, bruisemen, corner speak....you get great stats and great commentary which is bespoke to your fighter. also think the best part is bit where you almost knock someone out, the view is reducd and you have to get that flush punch through to their head or body to take them to the canvas, if you leave it too long, they revive and you are back to standard fighting rather then them on the defensive. If you are in this situation and get knocked out your objective is to move two orbs into two circles within the 10 secs. Each knock down that occurs makes this process harder and harder.
You also get warning and disqalification for rabbit punches or headbuts. The crowd even boo you ! And if you decide to go into a fight all gins blazing you wont last past the 6th round. Your stamina wains, you become slower, your punches are less powerful and you become more susceptable to knockdowns. In this way the gameplay is very realisitic, you ave to play the long game sometimes and time your combo or your just wasting precious energy. Alternatively if your lucky you can get a round 1/2 knockout with a cleverly placed haymaker.
All the big venues are here- madison sq gardens, staples centre, the viceroy- i like this one it reminds me of circus tavern in essex ! You still get to spend your winnings on sports gear fomr the EA shop, like new gloves, new boots and this time you get sponsorship too. You can spend your cash on entrance gimmicks like exclusive songs, dancing girls and fireworks to demoralise your opponant.
Summary: Still a great game...I think your better off buying fight night round 2 though
