Gears of War is an Xbox 360 exclusive and third person shooter. It was one of the only reasons I stayed with Xbox and put up with the £35 a year price for online; that's how good it is.
Set in the aftermath of the Locust invasion which wipes out most of humanity, it is up to the Gears to restore peace to the world. The most unique thing about Gears of War is the melee attack, it's not just the swipe of the knife like other shooters, it's a chainsaw on the end of your gun which will allow you to saw your victim in half while the blood and guts splash over your screen and have chainsaw duels with the locust. This is not the best aspect to the gameplay though, the best thing is actually the duck and cover system; even though you have a chain saw on the end of your gun and are fighting monsters/aliens Gears of War is the most realistic shooter currently on the market, as you don't just simply run around blindly shooting people, you have to take cover and wait for an opportunity to shoot. It doesn't just have good dynamics it also has a pretty good general atmosphere to it. It's got a gritty edge to the game, but also a surreal creepy presence and also a lot satirical humour that work well with character interaction, with the Clint Eastwood silent type, the cynical and witty type, the stereotypical American colonel and the big-crazy-friendly-black guy.
If you are looking for a game with a fun, challenging multiplayer but an even better campaign then you have no reason not to get Gears of War, unless you have PS3 in which case you will just have to miss out.
Gears of War was one of the first games i played when i bought my Xbox 360 and shooting games are definetly my favourate genre. Gears of War or GOW introduced a new style of running and gunning where by the camera angle was over the shoulder of your charactor making it feel like you were following them adding to the atmosphere and gaming experience.
GOW the Game
GOW is based on a ficticious set of charactors on a planet a lot like earth called Sera, on Sera a group of mutant looking creatures who live under the planet surface called the 'Locust Horde' have more or less taken over the plannet and the only people who can stop them are 'COG' humanities last stand in the form of some hard ass soldiers.
The following are the main charactors in the game:
Marcus Fenix - The hero of the game and the charactor the user controls in story mode.
Dom Santiago - Marcus's best friend and in game co-hort, Dom is searching for his missing wife.
Augustus Cole - Nicknamed 'The Cole Train', a former Football player turned soldier.
Damon Baird - Sarcastic but intelligent member of the squad of marines.
GOW is great fun to play from the first to the last level, you basically have to blast your way through scene after scene of Locust bad guys using a variety of over the top weapons such as machines guns with attached chain saws!! I like the way that even though the game is just run and gun the user has to use the games environment to user cover such as behind walls and cars to duck behind and run and leap into cover when under heavy fire. As well as moving around on foot the user can use a car in one level and even run along a moving train while mounted on a machine gun which all adds to the different experiences of the game. The controls are intuitive from the controller to the screen so the user very quickly picks up what to do in the game, what is also helpful is when presented with a puzzle or your not sure where to go on screen prompts offer hints and tips as to what do next. The game is split into numerous difficulty levels, easy and normal in my opinion are not enough of a challenge but playing on the hard settings can be very difficult and really make you think about how you have to approach a certain situation.
Guns 'N' Violence
GOW is certainly not recommended for anyone under the age of 18 and is very brutal and violent game, classic moves such 'curb stomping', 'frag tagging' and 'chaingsawing' are just a few of the colourful and gory ways of dispatching the Locust Horde. When ever an enemy is killed blood spurts all over the screen which is great fun however for the squemish of gamers blood mode can be turned of in the options menu.
The following are the main weapons in the game:
Lancer - The main weapon that Marcus and the troops use, a powerful machine gun with a chainsaw blade mounted underneath.
Snub Pistol - Small single hand held pistol useful for dealing executions to downed enemies - not useful for long ranged encounters.
Gnasher Shotgun - VERY powerful shotgun when used in close proimity to enemies, not so useful from long range.
Longshot Sniper Rifle - A rifle that allows you to zoom in from great distances and take out enemies without them seeing you. You can pull of spectacular head shots with this gun ;)
Torque Bow - A modern day bow and arrow type gun, this weapon takes a few seconds to aim at a target allowing them to dodge however if the torque hits the victim they have a few seconds before it explodes in turn blowing them up!
Boomshot - A long range missile launcher, if fired from distance into a crowd of enemies the result is not a pretty one! Its not advised to use this close range as you could end up blowing yourself up!!
Hammer of Dawn - My personal faveourate, this gun needs to be used in an open air environment, by locking onto a target the gun communicates to a satellite in space which in turn sends down a powerful laser beam disentigrating everything in its path!!
The online modes of GOW are probably its strongest selling points, there are various online modes that can be played within the game but my favourate is team death match where by teams of 4 take on each other in a particular setting from one of the games levels. Last team standing is the winner!!
I prefer online mode to offline single player as its great fun to play with friends especially over a head set, i never get bored of pulling of a spectacular head shot from distance against a friend!!!
Gears of War is certainly an Xbox classic and will be remembered as such for many years to come, it paved the way forward for the next generation of high definition gaming and i still play on it today.
You play sgt marcus fenix of delta squad of panet sera, hes a natural leader, who leads a squad, your best mate is domanic santiago and the heft cole 'train' a former sports star turned soldier. You are defending your home planet against the locust horde, aliens that want to take over the planet, exterminate mankind and use its resoucres- usual storyline really, but briliantly executed. Your in prison for abandoning your post to save your father, and dom breaks you out...this is where you start off. So uo set off to find 'the general' the main boss in charge ofthe horde ! (or so you think) and on the way you get to fly a flying moth !, kill alost stone hard bohemoth enemies that can smash through walls and kill wave after wave of locust
Around 15 hours, you get to shoot in 1st or 3rd person shooter mode, the camera angles are very complimentary and give you a good chance of accuracy. You also use heavy weapons like morters and gatling guns ontop of your usual assualt rifle, hand gun (which I really liked using and is surprisingly accurate), you also use a chain saw attachd to the rifle, which is great to use-really satisfying actually. The game deals with some faily adult themes so its best if the kidies dont play this one and it can be very gruesome. you also get a new reload system which means that should you press the button at the right time you can reload quicker then usual, save yourself precious seconds and perhaps save your own life. There are three levels of gameplay, easy, normal to hard. The game engine used for shooting behind cover or shoving yourself up against walls was the first of its kind and many games used this concept afterard realising it potential to improve gameplay. as wel as one player, you can play;
You can play either Marcus Fenix or Dom in 2 player co-operative
, eachplayer takes one or the other and you can command the other two characters in your squad - or 3 when there is the newby recruit carmine. I played this mode with my bro the whole time and its better then playing it one player trust me. The only problem with co-op is that your screen is halved and so this can be harder to see enemies that ae further away..play with a bigger tv and this is not a problem.
Unfortunately I only play arcade I or 2 player cooperative, I dont play online, but from what I hear its very good.
The game has great graphics, it can be very gory at times, heads exploding, people being set on fire and legs being blown off etc but it is good. Rain and fire effects look very good as do the myriad of monsters and goulies you encounter from the horde.
My first game for the xbox 360 was such an addictive game. The storyline was fresh and pretty original. The game visually is stunning with a great mixture of cut scenes blended well as you progress. The comedy could be considered as dry but it works well in the context of the story. The main characters of Delta Squad are in all well thought out and built up with their believable individualistic personalities Marcus is a natural leader yet their remains big characters in Cole and Dom. The campaign is fun to play throughout and I appreciated that the game consisted of a multi-player enable campaign as my brother and I had no need to fight over who plays first with this game being that good it becomes a game which you'll find hard to get bored of and will just keep playing wasting precious hours of your life away. The online in this game is brilliant and again very original plus the fact two can play on the same screen. This is the only multi-player game that could really rival Call of Duty in terms of players taking part and I often found myself choosing Gears over Cod. The online though like many games has its flaws with the various glitches which get extremely annoying. Its hard to argue with the range of weapons although not very extensive their very effective and leaves gamers wanting more in the sequel. Theirs nothing more fun than blowing some ones head of with a sniper. One other problem with the online is the various maps with some maps feeling more developed than others and leaves gamers playing repetitively on one or two maps for hours upon end which at least says something about how addictive the game actually is. I highly recommend this game if you haven't played it by now you really should.
Ok there are so many reviews about this game so there is little more you can learn from me but I just want to say ........
BUY THIS GAME!!!!
It is so out of this world!!! It is amazinggggggg!!!
Outstanding Campaign and superb multiplayer!
The campaign has 3 levels of difficulty which are normal, hardcore and insane. I started off on Normal and then worked my way through hardcore and then felt like I had built up my skills to play Insane. It is challenging but its not frustratingly challenging.
There is something very relaxing about playing this game and there is nothing better than jumping into a session after a long day in the office. The fun extends even more with co-op on campaign and a large number of multiplayer options to get stuck into.
The campaign is based on the journey of Marcus and Dom who are Gears in the fight against the Locusts who are the creatures from underground set about bringing the end to mankind. The campaign is set into 5 acts and which take you on travels across the world to find the light mass bomb in order to bring an end to the horde. Whether this is achieved or not I will leave for you to see for yourself. Throughout your journey you come across a host of memorable characters and ever get a chance to drive a vehicle!
I don't want to make this review to long because all I really need to say is BUY THE GAME!!! you will not be disappointed!
Let me know about your experiences!
Gears of War is a PC and Xbox 360 exclusive game, which means that you cannot get it on any other console than these. It was released in 2006 but it still retains it's title as one of the best 360 games to date, and rightly so.
You play Marcus Fenix in an intense battle against the Locust Horde, on the planet Sera, On this planet, there is a global war taking place between the Humans and the Locust. Your character, Marcus Fenix is a convicted soldier, guilty of abadoning his post in an attempt to defend his beloved father. He failed in this attempt and was imprisoned. 14 years later, you are broken out of a Locust infected prison by your best friend Dom Santiago (who you can control in co-op mode) and it is your job to save the world from the Locust enslaught. The story should take about 15 hours to play through on single player which is a decent length. However, once you know what you're doing and where you're going, you could complete it in as little as six hours (co-op).
The game is very good graphically, especially when played in it's preferred 60HZ and 720p mode, so if you have these at your disposal, use them. It is quite a dark game, with blood and grime a regular feature, which gives it a gritty appeal. This appeal coupled with the strong levels of violence warrant the 18 certificate which GOW has been granted.
The gameplay is different compared to other third-person shooter's with GOW's unique duck-and-cover system, which means that you can shield behind just about anything. At first, people may find it tricky but once used to it, you'll wish that it was on every 3rd person-shooter.
The reload system also deserved a comment. You can reload on any gun pressing the RB button, which begins the reload. If you hit RB again exactly in the middle of the 'perfect reload' region then you get a perfect active reload, which is the quickest and also gives a damage boost to the reloaded bullets.
Sound is quite hard to talk about when describing a game, so all I will say is that the sounds are realistic and appropriate for their situations. For example, when something which requires scary music is approaching, there is scary music (a long note of dread).
The co-op on this game is so good that I feel that it deserves it's own section. One of you plays as Marcus Fenix, and the other plays as Dom Santiago. You work together for most of the time, but also, split off in sections which stops it from getting repetitive.
Even if you don't like this sort of game, if you have a friend or sibling who you can play this with then, buy it as it is great fun.
There are three levels of difficulty to complete this game on. They are:
All of these are possible to complete the game on, even if you're not a regular third person-shooter player. Whilst playing on Insane however, it is a lot easier to play with a friend otherwise, the final chapter may not be possible (without giving too much away).
Overall, this is a fantastic game with a great storyline, and hours of fun. It also has the best co-op gameplay to date. I thoroughly enjoyed this title, and look forward to playing the sequel, Gears of War 2.
One thing which epitomises the joy which you receive whilst playing this game is pulling off a chainsaw move on just about anyone.
The game can currently be bought new from most gaming shops for around £5 to £10, or you can buy it preowned on Ebay for around £4 delivered.
This game was truly innovative when it came out and it still feels good playing it now. You take on the role of a COG soldier who has been released from Prison because the government which abandoned him now needs him.
I have to say I think this is the most fun shooter I have played on the Xbox 360. Nothing feels better than getting a headshot and hearing the head crunch when you only have one bullet to fire from you Longshot sniper rifle.
I like the 3rd person perspective as well as you can see enemies trying to sneak up on you easier. The visuals are also very impressive with Marcus' rugged looking face coming across in all its intended gristle, or the ugly charging Locust.
There is a storyline to gears of war but it is a bit bare at times and not fleshed out which is why I'm glad they released the books to help with this. Saying that you will not be disappointed but a proper storyline would have boosted this to the unforgettable game section.
The online is pretty fun too but I only bought this about a year after the Xbox and the learning curve on this is very high you have no idea how many times I was looking around a corner too long and got my head popped. It is a testament to how good it was by how hard it is regarded and how many people still play to this day.
The only reason I only gave 4 stars is because of the storyline and if I gave this 5 what am I supposed to give the sequel which is better?
When i first played this game, i didn't own a 360; i just had a standard Xbox and was playing the shite out of halo and halo2 so when my friend rang me up and asked if i wanted to come up and play co-op on Gears of War and he marketed the game to me as i quote 'the best game ever' i couldn't say no could I!
Consequently we played the game for the following 5 hours solid and with every second that ticked by i was getting so absorbed in to the game. In my opinion it was the best game ever made! The battle system was innovative and unique, using cover and aiming or just shooting for the hell of it over the top was awesome, much better than the Halo run and wherever you're looking is where you're going static movement and shooting.
The storyline is completely enthralling moving along nicely without losing you or getting to complicated with a few mini-bosses cropping up along the way. The story is surprisingly good value for money, it's longer than you'd think but you never feel at any time "am i done yet", it doesn't drag but you know when you're nearing the finish with the 2 scenes before it building up nicely.
Once you've played the campaign on the 3 difficulty settings in one sitting it's time to connect to Xbox live and start getting your groove on. The online play is simply fantastic; my favourite is playing the teams of 4 first to 19 rounds and racking up as many kills as you can with the full arsenal of weapons available to you over 15 different levels. Pure bliss!
One of the biggest underrated things of the game i believe is the work done by the audio department.
The music ties in nicely with the scenario you're in and the tempo ramps up nicely when the going gets tense. The sound effects are awesome too; especially if you play the game with the volume up with the massively satisfying active reload sound to the serene hum that lets you know you've killed all of the baddies.
Verdict: The best game EVER!! But seriously a very good game that has been bettered now but when it was out was incredible.
I urge you to buy it if you haven't played it even though it's a few years old. It's where it all began
This game is one of the pioneers of cover sytems and run and gun gameplay. Gears campaign tells the story of mankinds fight against the apocalyptic locust horde which threatens to wipe them out. The humans have a plan to finish the locust off once and for all after 15 years of intense fighting. The four main characters in the game are great. You will immediately fall in love with them. The locust are some of the greatets enemys in modern video games, especially the bigger boss locust which take some heavy firepower to kill. Some scenes from the game include, a city, a factory, a mansion, a train and an underground mine. Can be played online with a friend.
The multiplayer is what will keep you coming back to gears. Although it is light on game modes, the maps and gameplay are top class. Teams of four battle it out on small maps and wth nio respawns making the matches even more tense. The Lancer with a chainsaw attachment is Gears signature weapon due to its originality. The hammer of dawn is also alot of fun to use, as it is essential a laser blast from a satellite. Online leaderboards show how close you are to reaching that all mighty 10,000 kill mark!
Gears of War is definitely the better of the 2 Gears of War out.
The campaign is very powerful and is great fun and full of action.
GoW is my favourite 3rd person shooter.
I think that it has a great online multiplayer.
The matches are very intense and very exciting, 4v4 isn't huge but it is great!
I found the weapons very good and the graphics very good. The scenery around you can be destructive e.g. kicking down doors and blowing up blocks of walls with frag grenades and torque bows.
The weapons such as the Long shot, Torque Bow, Boom Shot are very powerful weapons and are great to use, these weapons have to be picked up by someone on your team or by you to be used. The graphics are very realistic and gory, heads get shot off and bodies obliterated.
It is such a great game to play with friends and one you can enjoy but it is not for young children. Definitely for 18+ as the graphics are very gory.
Overall a brilliant game.
After playing the HORRIBLE PC port of Gears of War, which was rife with technical glitches and horrendous customer support, I decided to give the game a go on my friend's Xbox 360, and I'm glad I did, because thankfully the original article was not plagued with these troublesome issues. Although hardly complex or clever, it's refreshingly unpretentious, smashmouth and down right exhilarating.
The first thing you'll notice is how fantastic the graphics are; the character models in particular are appropriately meaty, resembling over-the-top comic book characters, and the locales look gorgeous, with impressive draw distances. My only real complaint is that the environments are quite samey, and the colour palette adheres faithfully to a mix of earthy greens, greys and dark blues. There's little colour, but then this is about an environment that is being ravaged by grotesque monsters, so watcha gonna do? That said, the third-person, verite-style camera is amazing, giving the impression that you're a documentary cameraman running through the carnage.
Although, as I said, this isn't an especially clever game, it is a lot more cerebral and strategic than most shooters. You must employ cover well or you WILL die, and the key to survival is using cover effectively while catching the baddies off-guard in the process. Given how easy games have been getting in recent years, it's refreshing that this is quite a challenging game, and you won't be running-and-gunning any time soon. You'll have to be patient and co-ordinate your attacks with your teammates, or you'll fall prey to the numerous baddies soon. The game is quite short, though, and can be beaten quite comfortably in under 10 hours. It also boasts an online multiplayer mode, though, where you can team up and try to take down another team of players, which is fun if a little sluggishly paced for my liking.
Nevertheless, this is one of the 360's best console exclusives and I hope the third game is better than the second.
When it was first released, Gears of War was somewhat of a revolution. The basics of the gameplay involve taking cover behind a rock, car or anything else you can find and peeking round to shoot the Locust (an invading alien horde decimating Earth). As far as I am aware this cover system was not used in this way before this game came out.
There is more to this game than the cover system though, there has been quite a lot of thought put into the story of the game and when you first realise the scale of the infestation it really makes an impact. The design of the enemies is also well realised. The one design choice that I didn't personally enjoy was the main protagonist and his allies. He is basically a walking beefcake who shoots first and asks questions later ( hmmm... not the most original action hero I have ever seen)
The game is fairly challenging on the higher skill levels, which I think balances out the fairly short playing time of the game and without giving too much away, the final boss took me hours of joypad abuse to get the better of.
Another thing I should mention is that this game is certainly for a mature audience, the bad language and gore level are some of the highest I have seen in a game but once I dicovered one of the guns had a chainsaw on the end, I must admit I was grinning with sadistic delight!
In all, this is a good game but one that for some reason didn't capture my imagination in the same way that some others have. If you enjoy 3rd person shooters then there is plenty here for you.
This game is set a planet called Sora where these human soldiers are fighting against what seems to be an alien species only known as the locust. The game is a war simulation shooter.
You play as Marcus Fenix who gets let out of jail to help out in taking out the locust horde as he is fully awesome. He was sentanced to death for dereliction of his duty but now let out to fight and help them again.
The graphics in this game are very nice, they look great. The game plays at awesome frame rates with good spec PCs and the characters, environments and all the game is fantastically animated in the graphical style of the game.
The game is mostly about cover and firing however you can choose to take the silly path of going in shooting like crazy. However the duck and cover system in this game is very effective as it is simple to use and alway slooks good as you go from one cover area to another.
The in gam\e guns are awesome and varied, there are pistols, machine guns, rocket launchers etc. The locust are varied in game and you will find yourself fighting with some very large creatures at times which look brilliant.
Overall this game is one the most brilliant shooters out there at the moment.
This is an excellent game. It is a third person shooter, however it is not your average run in and blast everything in sight type game. If you do not think tatically about how you are going to conquer a partiicular situation you will be blown to bits. The single player is amazing, but the multi player is where this game truely stands out. Online (or through system link or same consol) is the way to get the best out of this game. You can try to complete the game throgh co-op mode, level by level or you can choose from a choice of many different game types...capture the flag/are, domination etc.
The game now is very cheap alos, you can pick up a copy for around £10 (if you dont mind buying second hand games) whioch is a very reasonable price considering how much gameplay and replay value you get from a game like this. Definatly play the 1st gears before oving onto the second.
well what can i say about this little beaut. i brought this game not expecting anything amazing as some of the reviews i read didnt seem to promisng, but i brought it anyway, and my god am i glad i brought it. this games is a milestone in the gaming industries.
first off the game play and graphics are just so smooth and sleak not a bad word to be said about them. you play as marcus fenix who with the help from his friends and team mates who are all c.o.g soldiers (all c.o.g soldiers have a very special and unique weapon a chainsaw lancer which is a gun with a chainsaw attachted which can be used for instant kills at close range) (domic santiago who will be your main partner throughout the story, augustus cole "train" a former thrashball player, anthony carmine the only one of your team who wear all the amour including the helmet and corporal damon baird who is a "tech head" you get a few other random ai helping along the way but most of them are just c.o.g soldier whose name you never know).
There are 4 different types of multiplayer game which are "warzone" (The game ends when one team defeats all of the players on the other team within a specified amount of time, otherwise the game is considered a draw when time runs out. a player may be downed but not out when this happens they will bleed out which is the same as bleeding to death if another player from thier team doesnt revive them quickly enough. ) then there is "assasination" (it is just like wazone except that one player will be the leader and match is won by killing the other teams leader). next theres "execution" ( which is similar to warzone also except a player must be executed to be killed thier is no bleed out) finally there is "annex" ( when players are killed they will respawn within 14 seconds. the objective is to capture the rings and get to a certain score first or before time runs out to do this your team must stand in the ring with none of the other team in the ring to capture it once captured they must defend it. if the other team gets in when there is no one from your team in it it is then taken away from you and they will begin to capture it).
gears of war has 10 origanal multiplayer maps and an additional 6 that can be downloaded completely free. so all in all one of if not the best shooter ever.
One of the most highly rated games of E3, Gears of War is looking likely to be the Xbox 360s Christmas blockbuster with the best graphics yet seen on the system and a tactical twist on the usual shoot em-up gameplay.
