Advantages: Fun, Easy to pick up, good for social events
Disadvantages: Price, Price of second guitar
I play a "real" guitar and was a little sceptical of this game at first, but I have to say I'm hooked. My Mum and Dad, who have never played on the Xbox 360 for more than 10 minutes love it, I sometimes find it hard to prise the guitar out of their hands!
Basically, you are the lead guitarist in a band and you have to play the songs on your guitar controller. Not much of a storyline, but that's not the point, there are about 70 songs, from 1960's Rolling Stones to present day muse. Combine that with 4 difficulties and a host of multiplayer modes, this provides hours of fun.
The guitar has five fret buttons which you hold down while pressing the strum bar as the note reaches the screen, as well as a whammy bar for the longer notes. It is very similar to the dance mat and those sorts of games. But don't worry if this sounds complicated, there are very good tutorials, and it is fairly easy to pick up.
While I enjoy playing this game on single player, what it really excels at is the multiplayer mode. On Xbox Live or with a friend in your room, you can play one of 4 modes, these boil down to co-operative or competitive, both are extremely fun. This is why I find Guitar Hero 3 is brilliant for parties, you can change the difficulties to even things up, and there is much hilarity all round. The only negative I have is that it is very expensive to buy a second guitar, almost as much as buying the package again! However you can use you normal Xbox controller for the second player.
There is a wide range of songs, and everyone will find something they like. As you increase the difficulty it really feels as if you are playing the real thing as one note on the Xbox is almost the equivalent to a note of the real song.
You get money for completing the songs, which you can then use to buy items such as new guitars, outfits and characters, such as Slash from Guns n' Roses, or the God of Rock.
Overall, whether you like to play the game or not, it is well worth buying, if only for the "Guitar Hero" parties you could have.
Summary: Very fun game for everyone, shame about the price of a guitar
