Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)
Advantages: Good AI, Great online
Disadvantages: Average Gameplay, Poor levels, Only 4 Maps
I had high expectations of this title. The awards it won, the fact it was made by one of my favourite companies of all time Valve and the hype surrounding it. I was expecting more from is a fairly above average title.
The premise of the game is you play as one of a team of Survivors in a Zombie Infested area. The object of the game is to basically Survive!
The game has 4 "movies" to complete. Each Movie is split into 5 parts and can be played in any order at any time. It makes the game feel like it has a loose structure and it gives players no real urge to rush to find out what lies next as each movie is essentially the same in a different setting. Each movie consists of 4 parts in which you must find the safe house with multiple routes through the level. Playing online with folk who have played it before kind of ruins the experience as they rush to the end instead of struggling to find it whilst finding hords of Zombies which is how it should be played. The fifth part of each movie sees you wait for rescue as you have to survive in the rescue area, contact the crew and get saved. It adds some variety but the 4 movies are overly repetitive and by the end youll have forgotten which was which. Each one takes 45-60 minutes, some less which only gives 3 and a half hours to see all the game has.
But one of the selling points is the way the AI works and its "supposed" to be a different experience every time but this isn't the case usually as the attacks and enemies are the same which means even if they do slightly attack in different places and at different times you don't feel it.
Overall I felt ripped off at only having four levels. Without xbox live to replay this with mates it becomes tiring very shortly.
You have a range of weapons at your disposal although disappointingly only 4 and a turret as well as grenades and Molotov's. The guns are quite straight forward and the game would have definitely benefitted from a wider arsenal.
The gameplay is poor by modern FPS standards, nothing inventive or new about it. Half the time its run, shoot, find a door, shoot mindlessly into the hords. Very little skill required.
The game takes into account the recent trend and popularity of co-op games and this can be played wither alone, with 3 AI controlled buddies or online. The game roars to live online and that is where it should be place. I would not recommend this game if you don't have Xbox Live. If you have got a regular bunch of gaming mates this will keep you occupied for hours! As well as the additional online modes which let you play as the Zombies against the survivors. It does have legs online but as I said only if you can handle playing the same maps and levels over and over again.
Overall a disappointing title.....
Also appears on CIAO
Summary: Overall a really dissapointing game
