Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)
Advantages: fast paced, easy controls, ideal for newbies and dedicated gamers
My husband is an aficionado of all video games - the latest console he owns and loves is an Xbox 360. Now, every now and again he would persuade me to play a racing game, a simple chase and shoot game and on one memorable occasion Halo! I tended to spend most of my time stuck in corners or staring up at the sky, getting increasingly bored.
I recently bought him a copy of Left 4 Dead - he didn't want it, but I got the titles mixed up and he ended up with this instead of what he actually wanted. He played for a couple of hours, although it is not his 'type' of game, so in a fit of guilt I agreed to play a quick game with him.
I have been stunned by how addictive this game is! Suddenly I understand what all the fuss is about. Suddenly I get the whole 'gaming' culture, and can see why he spends hours in front of the TV shooting various enemies in various locations with all kind of weapons.
Left 4 Dead is an ideal game for a newbie like me - the controls are fairly easy; pretty much just walking about and shooting. There is nothing complicated - no crouching, so stealth mode, no toggle maps. Just walk, point and shoot zombies. I can manage the controls and can even negotiate doors and stairs now! I did try to throw my 'health pack' at the zombies several times during the first few games - but I am getting the finer points of shooting vs healing myself :-)
Left 4 Dead is a first person shooter, which can be played by up to 4 players. You start in one location, and have to get your team across various landscapes, such as an airport, woodland etc, to another location without getting killed. It is that simple! There are a few types of zombie to make things interesting - smokers, tanks (watch out for the tanks!) and witches - all of whom kill or hunt you in different ways. You get swarmed regularly by a zombie horde, and if you are lucky you will have a Molotov cocktail or petrol can to throw at them. The game gives plenty of opportunity for gratuitous violence aginst the undead, as well as working out strategies of how to best defend a house you find yourself trapped in.
At the end of each of the four sequences, you have to wait in a location for rescue; chose the wrong location or don't have enough health, and you'll be playing that sequence several times!
I have lost an entire weekend playing Left 4 Dead with my hubby, and have stayed up past midnight twice to finish a game. Consider me an addict! I'll be buying Left 4 Dead 2 this weekend.
Summary: Excellent game to sharpen your zombie-killing skills!
