Now I would like to point out from the start that I am not a fan of ice hockey and I have never bought an ice hockey game before. I only bought NHL 2K8 as I was just looking for a really cheap game to play and I came across this. And on to the review...
I found that the intial presentation of 2K8 was really quite poor. The main menu is not clear or easy to use, and it just gets irritating when trying to navigate through it.
As I had never played a hockey game before I went straight to the tutorials to learn the controls and some of the basic rules. This part of the game should be good as people that are new to the franchise. However, I found rather confusing and during the various challenges is was often unclear what you had to do or how you did it. It should be easier for someone playing their first hockey game.
The in-game graphics are relatively good. The player and the arenas look good, although it is a bit too fast-moving to notice the visuals.
The music is ok. There are a large number of songs which are of quit good quality. The commentary is also average but long periods of time can go by without the commentators saying anything.
The controls are good when you work out how to use them. Well all but one. It not clear in the slightest how you are supposed to get the puck off the oppossing player if they have posession, which is a dissapointment.
Leveraging all of the next generation capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, NHL 2K8 features innovative gameplay, revolutionary player models and stunning visuals to create an entirely new hockey experience, centered on authenticity and the NHL Signature Style. Utilizing 2K Sports' NHL Signature Style, NHL 2K8 will highlight unique player characteristics never before seen in a hockey game. To complement their true-to-life attributes, marquee players will be fitted with branded equipment including skates, sticks, pads and helmets -- becoming visually recognizable on the ice.
