Race Driver Grid (Xbox 360)
Advantages: - Stunning graphics - Beautiful sound - Fun, arcadey gameplay
Disadvantages: - Multiplayer severly lacking
Codemasters have really outdone themselves with this game. The races focus on several different disciplines, including: Drift, Touge, Muscle, Formula 3 and Prototype. The main single player campaign dubbed 'grid world' allows you to race and master the above disciplines. One of the new features you'll probably have heard of is the flashback feature. This allows you to rewind during a race up to 10 seconds before, say, a crash. This gives you a second chance (and a third, fourth, fifth, tops). I found this feature useful, and I really liked not having to restart a le mans just because of one mistake.... or 5.
Oh yeah, after each season (each one lasts about 4/5 races) you're given the opportunity to race in a Le Mans 24 hour race, either for your own team or you can be hired by another team for the event. Whilst I did enjoy competing in the event, it only lasts 24 minutes in real life - which is kind of a downer for me, I was looking forward to pit stopping etc. The day/night cycle is however included, and driving in the dark (yes, I normally brake my headlights in the first minute) is incredibly difficult.
I'll judge GRID by its essential elements. I'll start with game play.
GAMEPLAY: I really like the take Codies have taken in this arcade racer. Like most other racing games, right trigger accelerates, left decelerates/reverse and B is handbrake. The game is incredibly easy to pick up and play and I found the controls very responsive. The ability to change the control scheme is also available. 9/10
GRAPHICS: Utterly sublime. The car models are beautiful; the tracks look slick and refined, and the user interface has a very appealing theme. The skid marks on the track which accumulate over time look great and there's nothing better than seeing the car in front's rear spoiler dragging along the ground at 90mph and eventually fall off, sparks and all. 9/10
SOUND: From screeching tyres to your team mate's funny accent, all the sounds add to the overall experience and everything's in sync. Some more sound tracks to listen to whilst navigating the menus would have been nice though.
One of the unique (I haven't seen it before, anyway) features of GRID is that before anything else, the game asks for your name. There is then an archive of voice files which contains a list of names. Once it has your name, it'll say it whilst your navigating the menus to tell you stuff and during races your pit crew will continually update you with important information such as "Well done [YOUR NAME], you just took 1st place!" or "OK [YOUR NAME], your radiator's taken some serious damage, be careful." I absolutely love this feature and think it should be included in more games. 9/10
MULTIPLAYER: This is where GRID trips up. The online is unrewarding (except from a few achievements) and getting into a game is an unnecessarily irritating process. Not only this, but in most games I got into were riddled with lag. Split screen is available though. 4/10
LONGEVITY: There're plenty of events to compete in, and once you've won them all and mastered each discipline (this takes quite some time, don't expect to be trading the game in within a week or two of purchase) there're some quite cool achievements to conquer. Although the multiplayer is pretty disappointing, you can still play with friends split screen or use the track day mode which lets you play on any track with any unlocked car. 8/10
If my review hasn't convinced you, at least try out the free demo available on Xbox Live - it won't disappoint.
