Race Driver Grid (Xbox 360)
Advantages: Great vareity of track, amazing graphics and car handling, cheap as chips!
Disadvantages: Lack of Demolition Derby and Midnight Togue events in career mode
Indeed, Race Drive GRID from British developer Codemasters is now almost 5 years old (how time flies!) but after all this time this game still has one hell of a reputation about it as a racing game. Yes we have so many great racing games available for the Xbox 360 (Forza 4, F1, DIRT, PGR 4 etc etc), but Grid's amazing arcade style and challenging career mode still puts it right up there at the very top of the ''top racing games of all time'' leaderboard.
The game starts with you starting out as a newcomer, a rookie, a novice whatever you want to call yourself competing in a one off race to get you right into the game. Pretty much after you fill out your details (name and country) and after a few short credits you are rather unexpectidly thrown straight into your first race and wow what a race! set in San Francisco it is a lovely city based track which funnily enough is one of the best tracks of the game! After the first race you then have to race about 5 races in order to make enough money to create your own team and start your career!
The career mode itself is layed out beautifully with a wide range of events to choose from. You need money to enter each event though so you can only afford to enter the events at the very bottom to begin with, but as you earn money as you progress through your career you will find yourself eligible to enter many more events. The vareity of events is really unique. There are street races, demolition derby events (only 2 though in career unfortunately!), Pro Togue events which consist of you going head to head with another car but can't make any contact with him/her or else you will receive a penalty which means you automatically loose the event. You have to be extra careful in these events and Midnight Togue which are the same as Pro Togue events except these are based in darkness which can be really hard to win depending on the difficulty level you have chosen.
The car handling is very impressive and realistic. It can take a little time to get used to at first though and some racers won't immediately take to it straight away, but after you have got used to it, the handling of the cars will be as easy as pie and you will win race after race once you master both the handling and the layout of the tracks. Graphically as well Grid is stunning. Codemasters have done us very proud as always buyt it has to be said Grid looks like one of the best looking race games from a graphics perspective ever made to date!
The multiplayer mode in Grid is simply amazing. It is one of the finest, most polished racing games for multiplayer fans ever made. You can choose between Ranked and Player matches, although competing in Racked matches will earn you precious Experience Points which in turn will increase your online ranking the more events you compete in. OK some of the competitors can be a little rough at times (OK very rough, lol), but that's what makes the online races so much fun to play. If someone crashes into you on purpose, you can always kick them off the session should you wish, although your vote to kick he or she off isn't enough to kick them off completely, more people would have to vote (back you up!) to accomplish this! But let's face it, kicking people off isn't very nice is it? After all it's only a game.
Overall, Grid is an awsome game. I could spend the whole day talking about how good Grid is. If you haven't already played Grid, I strongly suggest you go out and buy it. You won't regret it!
Summary: An amazing racing game. One of the best for the Xbox 360 to date!
