The newest of the Rock star games, Red dead redemption certainly does not disappoint. If you liked the GTA games its not set in stone that you will also like this as although the concept is the same the fact that it is set in the old west makes it a very different game.
1. The story- Once again Rock Star have come up with a great storyline for the protagonist (John Marsten), a semi rogue who is begrudgingly made to fight on the side of the law. It's not that he hates lawmen or that he's an evil man; he just doesn't like the way he's been made to do it (his family has been kidnapped by the government). He's a very likeable character who you will enjoy playing as.
2. Side missions- Once you have completed the game you don't have to stop, as there are a load of extra side missions you can do, such as retrieving someone's horse or bringing a sick woman some medicine. These kind of things might be best done throughout the story however rather than going back to them as they're not the most thrilling of things to do. By doing them in between it allows the story to go on for longer as well.
3. The game- It is a very good game, it gives a lot to do throughout. It lets you do your own thing to an extent (although the storyline is set in stone, you can make your own way around buying property, shooting bandits and killing and skinning animals to sell them on).
Although i think it's a great game i have to acknowledge where a think it could have achieved better standards.
1. At times the story can get a bit 1 dimensional, after all what else is there to do in the wild west other than shoot some bad guys. The game does try and involve some interesting story lines and they are interesting, it's just they do occasionally get a bit monotonous.
2. Occasionally the gameplay- Another area of the game that gets a bit monotonous is the shooting. As the game looks onto targets automatically it often doesn't test your skill. I'll admit that as the gameplay is at the moment it would be difficult to change this style as letting the player attempt to aim themselves could get very difficult. However i wouldn't be opposed to having the option of a possible manuel change to first person shooter (sort of like Call of Duty style gameplay) to make it a bit harder and therefore less 'samey'.
These bad points of the game are not something that would stop me from playing it. Even with the things i've addressed it's still very much worth a play. Every game has areas which do not live up to some people's standards and yet they will still get played because they are still enjoyable.
This game has given me nothing but enjoyment since I got it. I have completed it several times and probably will complete it again this evening. I just can not get enough of it. Riding around on horseback shooting bandits in the old west, the only thing I like doing in the evening. The missions are obviously an integral part to the game and I can not fault them. The only thing I can fault are the glitches but they are often too amusing to care too much about! I have had great fun being able to jump my horse through the roof of some barns and then jump along the rooftops like it is normal occurrence. I am not really an avid gamer, but something caught my eye about this game and I am glad that I purchased it. I like games that have a story to them, games that do not just involve you shooting people and that's that. This game has a great story and you also get to shoot things! It's a win win situation. I would recommend anyone to buy this game, but I also understand that you can't please everyone. If you are into role playing games, games that have a storyline, some heart to them and you are able to shoot some bad guys, then this is the way to go.
== RED DEAD REDEMPTION ==
Back in 2004 there was a game entitled Red Dead Revolver for the original Xbox and it went down as one of my all time favourite games and when I heard that Red Dead Redemption was being released I was overjoyed and knew immediately it was going to be the same sort of game. Red Dead Redemption is an open world action-adventure western game. The game was developed by Rockstar San Diego and it was also published by Rockstar Games. The game is set in 1911 and features a very intriguing story which revolves around John Marston a former outlaw. Red Dead Redemption is a really good game and its really hard to compare it to the original because I haven't played the original in years. Red Dead Redemption is available for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 console. There have also been game add-ons which are available for purchase over Xbox Live or from local video game shops just like any normal game release.
=== STORY ===
The game has a really good story but it also features different segments of the story in side missions as well as the main missions. There is also an added story with game add-ons. You take the role as John Marston a former outlaw who was once a member of a gang led by Dutch van der Linde. John is taken away from his wife Abigail and his son Jack by government agents who tell him to hunt down his old gang members and bring them to justice. John has no choice but to help and he sets off in search of his former gang members and leader. Along the way John meets many allies as well as many enemies. These allies try and help John find his old gang members. Can John put an end to his old gangs crimes and will he ever see his wife and son again!
=== GAMEPLAY ===
Red Dead Redemption has lots of different things you can do in the game some good and some bad. The game is shot from a third person perspective which most games are nowadays and to be honest it works really well with this game because the main character looks fantastic. The map of the area is huge and is quite like a map from a GTA game. It can take forever to get from one side of the map to the other and traveling on horse is one of the quickest ways. Sometimes when traveling long distances you might come across civilians in the middle of the desert that require your help. These are a sort of side mission but they are fairly short. There are also a wide range of variety in them from saving people from gangs, saving people from wild animals and many more.
John Marston has many tricks up his sleeve and you can just about utilize most of them to harm your enemies. He can carry quite a lot of different guns but barely starts with any. However you can visit the weapon shops to buy new weapons and you can also upgrade your current weapons which works out really well in the long run. John also has a lasso which can be used for all kind of things. You can use it to catch wanted criminals, you can use it to catch new horses and you can even use it to disarm your enemies. The lasso is one of my favourite items to use because you can have a lot of fun with it.
There are numerous side missions that come in all shapes and sizes. My personal favourites are the wanted posters. Simply walk up to a poster and click your button to start it. The rewards for these are actually really good especially if you bring the criminal back to the prison alive. If you don't fancy doing this or find it tricky then it doesn't matter too much because you can kill them because they are wanted dead or alive posters. There are a ton of other side missions that appear as you get further in the game and most of them appear on your mini map in the bottom left corner of the screen.
In the game there are numerous other places you can visit which include other shops to stock up on supplies especially healing items. There is also the Law which can cause you trouble if you don't behave. You can just about free roam everywhere and do anything you like which can include a killing spree if you so wish. However you will then become a wanted man and the Law will be on you within no time. You can also gamble in the game to earn money by playing Poker, Blackjack, Five-Finger Fillet, Horseshoes and many more. You can also get a part time job to earn some extra cash. You can loot bodies for cash and items and you can also pay off your bounty to stop gangs and the law coming after you.
One of the best parts to the game is the duels. The duels are basically you against one, two or maybe more enemies at once. Time is slightly slowed down in duels to give you a fighting chance. After pulling your gun out you then have to aim at your enemies and you can either go in for the kill or disarm them all by shooting there weapon from their hands. Something new to the game is fame and honour. Fame is gained by killing people, doing jobs, finishing tasks, helping strangers in need and there are many more ways to gain fame. The more fame you have the better rewards you will get. Honour is determined on what you do in the game. If your good and do good deeds then your honour will rise which will in turn get you discount at shops and civilians may turn a blind eye if you commit a crime. Overall there is a lot to the game and its definitely worth owning.
=== MULTIPLAYER ===
The multiplayer in Red Dead Redemption is definitely worth a mention because its quite popular to say the least. There are numerous things you can do in multiplayer mode. You will come across many different gamers online and you can actually do what you want and free roam with people if you wish. There are also lots of multiplayer challenges that are a lot of fun to play and there is a variety in them too. Also everything you do in multiplayer will also earn you XP (experience points)and can lead to you leveling up. You can work together in multiplayer or you can go up against 15 other online players. To play multiplayer you do need to be connected to Xbox Live and have a gold membership.
=== GRAPHICS ===
I really like the graphics to Red Dead Redemption and I feel they really make the game much more enjoyable. One of the outstanding features is the way the weather changes and the graphics begin to shine when this happens. It is really stunning how one minute it could be very sunny and all of a sudden it could come over cloudy and then absolutely chuck it down with rain. It is beautiful how it works in this game and definitely makes the game better. Also all of the characters in the game are designed magnificently especially John because he is full with numerous different facial expressions and they look stunning. Other bits such as the scenery is also really well designed. Overall I think the graphics are definitely a strong point to the game.
=== SOUND EFFECTS ===
The sound effects are also really good from start to finish in the game. All of the characters are voiced and they sound brilliant and fit in the game really well. The music to the game is fairly good and gives that western feel to the game. I was also really impressed with certain sounds in the game. For example when your riding a horse it sounds almost perfect with the different surfaces you travel on whilst riding one. I also like the sound when its thrashing down with rain because it sounds almost real. The gun play action and sound effects to it are equally as impressive. Overall the sound effects are probably as good as the graphics to the game and its fairly hard to choose which is better.
=== DIFFICULTY ===
The game isn't at all that difficult to be honest. The controls to the game can be slightly awkward as you get further in the game because more controls are used later on. Most of the missions are simple and you regularly get checkpoints so even if you die or fail then your game will load from the last checkpoints. The checkpoints are also quite frequent so it doesn't really cause problems. The map in the game is very simple to follow and does make things a lot more easier. Online play varies for difficulty depending on what your doing online. Overall I think Red Dead Redemption is a fairly simple game and most gamers would also find it simple too.
=== LONGEVITY ===
Red Dead Redemption is a fairly decent sized game. Its also one of these games where the multiplayer rarely gets boring and can last quite a long time. If your just doing the main story missions then the game isn't exactly long and will only last maybe 12 hours tops. To fully complete the game your looking at around the 30-35 hour mark. Also if you get the game add-ons it will possibly add on an extra 20 hours which is absolutely fantastic. I think its really good in terms of length and is definitely a plus side to the game.
=== ACHIEVEMENTS ===
This is one of the major parts to the game because there are a total of 95 achievements to get. This is because there are quite a few for the game add-ons. Most of the achievements are just random things like capturing someone instead of killing them, completing so many tasks, killing so many enemies, get so many headshots, kill all different types of animals in the game and so on. There are still the odd few achievements that you will acquire as you playthrough the game.
=== PROS ===
*A wide open world which can explored fully.
*Its definitely something different and there aren't many western games available.
*Lots of missions and side quests with an enthralling story.
*Top quality graphics and sound effects.
*Multiplayer options are really good for this type of game.
*There are game add-ons available so the game will last longer.
=== CONS ===
*The game has a few glitches here and there which slightly disappoint me.
*You also do a fair bit of backtracking in the game which might disappoint some people.
*Also a few of the missions seem pointless with why your there in the first place.
*There isn't a whole lot of gun play in the game and I did expect more.
*I get bored of the game quite easily after playing for a few hours straight!
=== FINAL THOUGHT ===
Red Dead Redemption is a really good game but in my opinion its not quite as good as Red Dead Revolver but it definitely features more and has a lot of promise. Also with the add-ons Red Dead Redemption would suit people more and does make the game last an awful lot longer. The games have similar qualities but they also have a few different bits to each other which makes each game unique in its own way.
I would seriously recommend the game for many reasons. One being its a western game and is very different to all games and it has something to offer all gamers. If your a fan of the GTA series I think you would also love this because its created by the same people with the only difference being its horses instead of vehicles. If your a fan of a good adventure game then this is definitely worth it. It doesn't have action from start to finish but it has its fair share and overall I would recommend!
The price of the game is a very interesting one because when it was first released it was full price and I decided to wait. I waited months on end and just couldn't get it cheap enough. The reason why I waited was because my cousin had the game and I borrowed it but I couldn't get off the first section of the game because it would crash and his copy was literally brand new. I assumed it was my Xbox that didn't like the game. When it finally dropped to around £10 I decided to get it. Luckily it worked and it was for a second hand copy. The game is selling in many different shops especially online and it usually goes for around £10-£12 which includes packaging. Overall its definitely wort5h its money and I'm very glad I bought it in the end.
The game has an age rating of 18+ because it does feature very strong language, violence and much more younger gamers may find offensive. The game manual to the game is a brilliant one. Its full with information about the game and lists almost everything you need to know about it.
Top game with lots of fun available so I would give it a respectable 8/10!
Review also on Ciao under the username: MrBrightside1987!
I have had this game since the day after it was released and can safley say its Rockstars best ever open world game its Fun and Awsome.
The single player story is realy fun and enjoyable to the end! Not to mention all the mini games, bountys, random events etc.
Multiplayer is just awsome 16 player free roam with gang hidouts and the ability to create a posse with freinds is brilliant! Also the competitive games like Grab the bag, Shootout etc are all good when playing alone. Also with the dlc's like Liars and Cheats the addition of multiplayer gambing and horse racing is GREAT!
This game gets 5 stars for being a game you can never get bored of. I definatly recommend this game to anyone that likes the GTA series or open world games or just likes having fun online with freinds or alone.
A fantastic game
* PERSONAL SUMMERY *
When I first saw this game advertised, I was really interested in it. I find it really difficult to find games I like on Xbox, I'm not really into first person shooters (other than Call of Duty) and most games they bring out are First person shooters, Racing, and Football. Myself, I am personally into Adventure, Mythical and Strategy type games and anything where you can ride horses! :)
I have yet to complete this game but anyone who liked the Grand Theft Auto game by Rockstar will most likely love this game too. The game follows a very good and at parts funny storyline but you don't feel restricted into just doing that if you want to have a break and do something else. There are secret treasures to find, a vast amount of achievements to unlock, rare hores to capture, a number of minigames to play including Poker and Blackjack, side missions, wanted posters and so much more. Even just exploring the land is amazing and you will come across all different people who will challenge you or even try to kill you.
be warned, it can be quite gory, hense one reason it's rated an 18.
There is hours of gameplay in this game!
* WHAT IT'S ABOUT *
Red Dead Redemption is an open world action-adventure western game. Most of the game's story takes place in the year 1911, during the decline of the American Old West. The game follows John Marston, a former outlaw, while he sets out to hunt down his former gang members. Marston's wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a bounty hunter. Having no other choice, he sets out to bring his three former gang members to justice. Red Dead Redemption covers three states: New Austin, Nuevo Paraiso and West Elizabeth. All of them are located in the territory of the border between the United States and Mexico. The game takes place in 1911, featuring the decline of the Wild West and the cowboy and outlaw archetypes that shaped it.
* SOLO GAMEPLAY *
You can have a look at many gameplay videos on youtube, but generally Red Dead Redemption is an open world game where you can go anywhere you like and you can interact with nearly anything in the environment. One of my favourite things in the game is that you primarily you horses as your main mode of transport. There are many breeds which are indicated by their colours, and 3 rarer breeds which are faster than the normal breeds. You need to run around the world to find them, lasso thena nd then break them in to ride them.
The environment is absolutely stunning coupled with the lighting effects it feels almost real, and I've found myself just running about the land for hours picking flowers and skinning animals for money, just to enjoy the vast scenery. It is primarily land based as swimming is not an option because character you play - John Marston - cannot swim, therefor he will drown if he ventures too far into deep water.
There's lots of small side missions to do apart from the main storyline but be wary of random people calling for yourself, quite a few times myself I've fallen into an ambush and my horse get's stolen or I get killed.
Red Dead Redemption makes use of a morality system where players have the ability to gain positive or negative 'honor', this also works along with another system called 'fame', showing and governing how people react based on your honor status. If you have negative honor, lawmen and civilians will usually say bad things to you and will be fearful of you. The lawmen may even threaten to kill you the next time they see you. If you have positive honor, lawmen and civilians will usually greet you and feel safe around you.
The main combat in the game is gunfire, but you can use knives aswell. Generally the main guns are Pistols, Shotguns and snipers. You don't always have to shoot badies though, sometimes the 'Wanted Poster' side missions will pay you more to lassoo the enemies and bring them back alive. Be careful around towns though, as from personal experience I have accidently pressed the wron button and hijacked a wagon by mistake instead or riding as a passenger, and also shot my gun by accident killing innocent people!
There is also a combat feature called 'Dead-Eye' which slows time down letting you target specific areas on your target for a multiple bullet precision shot. This feature comes in very handy and has saved my life many times on the game and made certain missions alot easier than if not using it.
* MULTIPLAYER *
Personally, I havent really played the multiplayer properly, but what it contains is 16 player free-for-all and team based sessions. These both start of with a Mexican standoff. Survivors of the standoff will be able to move to any part of the battlefield to prepare for respawning enemies. There are crates in the environment will contain extra weapons, ammo, as well as recharge Dead-Eye power. You can level up and complete weapon challenges giving rewards such as new character models, golden weapon skins, new titles, and new mount breeds.
* COST *
When the game first came out, It was at top end price and I didnt want to spend that much on it incase I didnt enjoy it much, as from what I saw on the trailers it looked amazing, but you never really know until you properly play it.
I waited months and months for the price to drop a little, but it never did! About 6 months after it's release I finally managed to buy it for a fairly cheaper price second hand. I'm really glad I did buy it though because It's a brilliant game and is well worth the higher new price if you wanted it brand new.
Currently (25/5/11) at Play.com it's selling New for £17.99 which is an absolute bargain for this game!
* NOTES *

Red Dead Redemption is a timeless sequel to Red Dead Revolver where the lucky owners of this game get to play as John Marston - an ex - Outlaw - forced to hunt down his former posse members to save his wife and son. This game takes sandbox to a completely different level - where players can roam the wicked wild west - baron mountains and Northern Mexico. Players can aimlessly wander down the tumbleweed - ridden mud roads of mexico and america and encounter endless events or complete missions as they come and encounter the events along the way. The Hours will fly past as you track down your former posse members - one by one.
An interesting aspect of the game is the fame/honour system. Through various player made choices - you can chose whether to be good or evil. For example, the act of killing a civilian decreases your honour - whereas helping a civilian increases it.
The intricate plot unravels into an epic face-off that will have you begging for more!!!
Multiplayer also exceeds itself in this game. Free roam is exactly the same map as singleplayer except the player completes gang hideouts(towns where gangs have taken over - the aim is to complete the hideout as quickly as possible) to ea experience points -which in turn allow you to level up - the higher level you are the better guns you get. Oh - did i forget to mention that anything goes? Kill civilians and other players to gain experience as-well - yes that includes your friends ;)
To Summaries Red Dead Redemption is one of my all time best games - this game calls itself sandbox - but this could be a whole beach. If you are looking for an exceptional storyline, Multiplayer and downloadable content ( yes that means zombies) then pick op your copy of Red Dead Redemption Now - You won't regret it..
The moment you step off the train into the stunningly realised world of Red Dead Redemption, you'll realise you don't want to leave any time soon. The game has the look and feel of the truly great westerns down perfectly, from the weatherbeaten buildings of the small frontier towns you'll be riding through to the grizzled, world weary characters you'll meet along the way. Something that struck me was how alive the world felt, despite the awful lot of seemingly empty space. The towns look and behave like a real town would & the random encounters within the the wilderness are engaging and interesting.
The combat is pretty standard third person shooter fare - the era means that weaponry is pretty limited, but it never feels truly restrictive. Dead Eye mode, where you go into slow motion and carefully pick your targets, comes in handy during some of the more intense firefights; but for the most part you'll have a pretty easy time out of it.
The story is great, and engaging tale of a man's journey through his past. Marston is a deeply flawed protaganist, but is instantly likeable, and the cast of characters you'll meet along the way are equal parts hilarious, loveable and disturbing.
From when I first watched the trailer I was instantly hooked on the idea that this game is based around. The huge epic wild west stretching into Mexico is beautifully presented in this game.
The story mode on this game has you sent on little adventures into the world so that you can appreciate the setting of the land and whilst providing you with high intensity gun fights and chases. The story line has a good depth to it, learning about family's and characters whilst helping them with everyday average wild west jobs (like shooting the animals trying to kill your farm animals) to going out to seek revenge. When adventuring on your own in this game you are presented with wild animals trying to kill you which if you kill them you can skin them and sell it to help buy you better guns or supplies or a better horse. And that's just single player.
Multilayer see's that you and your friends can team up to defeat non player characters or hunt down the other player in the game. This is one of the best on-line modes i have seen for the console in a long time.
For hours and hours of fun id say that this is an amazing buy
The name's John Marston, after being betrayed and left for dead by his old gang, payback is the only thing on the mind. on your quest for redemption you will be living at the end of the wild west exploring the good ol' US of A and Mexico!!! Fight your way through gangs, rustlers, indians and... bears??? From the makers of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, with a solid story and massive free roam multiplayer this is by far the game of 2010!!! Avaliable on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The Story will keep you on the edge of your seat til the end and getting through the ranks on multiplayer will keep you more than occupied. Awesome graphics beautiful scenery and you get to shoot boars and ride on horseys lol. Get this game and get the New Nightmare expansion pack and you wont be disappointed horses of the apocalypse and zombies, bonus!!!
red dead redemption is about an outlaw called John Marston who gets threatened by outlaws to kill his family then he trys to talk to one of his freinds called Bill williamson and gets shot by his old freind (now rival) you nearly die until someone called bonnie saved his life(she lives in a ranch called McFarlens ranch).
You go hunting with her at night and hunt with her to stop bunnys from eating vegtables.
When you know her well you go and round a herd and get the herd of bulls to a tree near McFarlens ranch called the Old oak tree she tells you about a sheriff in a town called Armadillo where you go and kill Bandits in Twin rocks (Basiclly a passage way with loads of cliffs above you).
The game gets harder every mission.
P.S Im not going to tell you all sorry but this is my first review so if you dont like it im fine with that thanks.
This is my boyfriends game, but we share his xbox, so I have played this myself now. I'm still in the progress of completing the game, but believe I'm far enough in to make an educated review about it!
Red Dead Redemption is set in the Wild West and the protagonist is a man called John Marston (This is who you play as). The general storyline of the game is that you're in America (and later Mexico) to not only make the people's lives who live there a little better, but also to find a bandit named Bill Williamson because you apparently have unfinished business.
During the game you have to shoot the bad guys and save the good guys - it's pretty simple. The more good guys you save, the more honourable and famous you become, and the more money you get! As well as the general story line there are also stranger missions where you encounter random people and must do as they ask in order to complete this. You can also hunt animals and birds and increase different titles such as hunting or sharpshooter.
I have read some reviews which complain the game has been made too easy by something which is called the "dead eye" meter. This is something which allows you to slow down time whilst you shoot bandits or animals, and makes it easier to aim properly. I think this makes the game a bit easier than some other Rockstar games such as grand theft auto towards the beginning of the game, but as the game progresses the missions become harder and aiming becomes less important, with timing and strategy becoming more prominent. Whatever your position on this, certain aspects of the game are going to be harder for certain people - and if you find the game REALLY easy then good for you, come and get your sticker.
I think the game is interesting to play, with a fairly intriguing storyline and cool features. I would recommend this to anyone who is old enough to play it- you don't need much gaming experience and is another brilliant release from Rockstar.
Hope this was helpful :)
Read Dead Redemption is my favorite wild west type game of all time. I've always been fascinated by western shooters that would've taken place in the same time period as John Wayne movies. Maybe it's because John Wayne was such a legendary actor with amazing movies, who knows? But that doesn't matter, on to the game review.
The campaign is extraordinary. The story line is exceptional to say the least. I really got into it, and I felt like I was one of the characters in the game. The story line leads you to like the characters, even if they are complete and total jerks. This game has a Grand Theft Auto feel to it, but it's not nearly as gory or violent. There's not too much profanity, but it still has all the thrill that Grand Theft Auto had.
Online play is alright, but it's nothing to write home about. It usually takes me a while to connect to a game.
Red Dead Redemption is the sequel to the 2004 title Red Dead Revolver.
Set in the wild west in the early 1900's, you play as John Marston, an ex criminal who's family have been kidnapped by the U.S. government and will release them if Marston kills his old gang.
Made by the same people who made the Grand Theft Auto series of games (Rockstar), there is a very clear familiarity between the two. Needless to say, if you loved GTA, you will love this. Porsche's have been replaced by stallions and the FBI have been replaced by the county Sheriff but the similarities are all there.
Other than that though, there are some very big differences. The main one being that you get to play a cowboy (say what you will but cowboys are cool!) and instead of the massive cities with huge buildings and cluttered streets, you get wild expanses of wasteland with nothing around you but the desert and the visually stunning surroundings. Everything you also expect to see in a wild west game is there from the rattlesnakes in the desert to the duels at dawn and to the steam trains which are like the taxi's in GTA).
As I said the main story follows John Marston in his quest to free his family. However, there is plenty to do if you don't fancy doing the missions. In this fame and honour play a huge part and these can be increased by doing side missions for people. In these missions you may be asked to catch a thief or retrieve a horse and completion of these means that your fame increases which benefits you throughout the game. Alternatively you could always go the other way and become an outlaw and purely cause mayhem wherever you go. Beware though, once the sheriff is after you a bounty is put on your head and even though you may have lost the local law enforcement, they can catch up with you at any time you come across one.
As well as the above side missions, you could happily spend your time roaming round the terrain trying to complete the sharp shooting, herb picking and treasure hunting missions. Alternatively you could always go into a local bar and play a couple of hands of poker or just drown your sorrows at the bar.
The main story missions provide a good mix of tasks. Of course there is the typical gun slinging and horse riding missions (or a combination of the two) but you are also required to do more patient tasks like escort someone to a specific place or even to heard cattle. What this means is that you don't often get too bored or fed up of the same repetitive missions. As you develop through the game you also learn more about John Marston and about the relationships he develops. What I also found is that whenever I had a moral choice (e.g. kill someone or let them go free) I would always do the good thing as I think that's more in his character!
Visually the game looks amazing. Right from the opening credits you know you are in for something that is going to astound you and the game doesn't let you down. Whether it's the amazing sunsets or the level of detail in people faces, you cant help but stare at it!
In terms of controls, Red Dead Redemption adopts very similar controls to GTA. Movement is very simple but the one slightly painful thing I always found was that aiming using the control stick could be a pain in the backside sometimes and can cause frustration. One of the few things Rockstar has kept from the original game is the "Dead Eye" mode where, with the click of the thumb stick, the game goes into slow motion and you are able to shoot multiple opponents before they have unholstered their gun.
One thing I like about this game in comparison with others is that there are no real baddies and goodies. Of course its clear who is bad and who is good but there are times when you sympathise with the bad guy at times and disagree with the good guys actions.
Overall I loved this game. Even after completing the game a variety of times, I still found myself playing the free roaming parts either for a bit of fun or to complete the side missions. I would even go as far as to say that this is my favourite game of the year for 2010.
In short, go and buy it!!
I hadnt played a Rockstar game since GTA 3- yes it was THAT long ago...but striaght away I could tell this was developed by them. You play John Marston, the guy wuith a heart of gold and a shady past, betrayed by your friends your out for revenge.
One of the great things about this game is the way you can pick up and play, by this I mean the ease of the controls, the weapons scroll, map and inventory checks are all easy. There is a good variaety of weapons too from six shooters to double barrelled shot guns and sniper rifles (or at least the western version).
You should a good solid 30-40 hrs of gamplay form this game ranging from if you wnat to go through wiuth minimal extra side missions, or if you want to do everything, like play cards !! Blackjack is good fun. The dead eye feature is brilliant, it uses the rockstar max payne bullet time feature to slow down time for other characters, the difference is that you can aim (this is different from max payne) at different targets, especially good with a 6-shooter and let go....bnag bang bang etc, its great fun taking out 6 targets on one go.
The plot is pretty good, the ending is a little lame, playing your son as you seek revenge, it sems more like a side mission then part of the main plotline and I thought the second game would invlove the son, but it invl=olves zombies- btw: undead nightmare is brilliant, I actually prefered it to RDR- not too long and well worth the £15 you can get it on amazon for
The voice actors deliver some pretty witty lines, like the fraudster Nigel west Dickens, who I believe pops up in undead nightmare as a seller of the miracle protection from the undead !!
The game has a tendency to slow down or even freeze if there is too much going on and the horse riding form place to place is a little laborious, you can take the stagecoach, but they arnt everywhere and the whole picking up women of ill repute thing is basically just copying GTA.
Id liek to compare to GUN but I havent played that yet
Red Dead Redemption: A well of shining water in the dry, wild lands of open world games. Yup, its pretty good...
The story behind the game is that you, John Marston, have been sent by the authorities to find and kill old members of the gang you use to ride out with. Gang? Yeah, its set out in around 1911 in America. As Marston was part of a gang, he use to kill, rob, and defy the law, as you can imagine. So its hard to say that you play as the 'hero' in the game. Nevertheless, Marston is indeed trying to seek 'Redemption', even if the law are using his family as hostages. You arrive in a town by train and then its up to you to help out...
Red Dead takes place in a fairly open world with 3 parts to unlock, each with a ton of things to do. You can complete story missions to advance through the game fast, or you can simply take it easy and play a game of horseshoes. That's right, horseshoes. A great addition to the open world are places known as 'gang hideouts'. These are where the 'bad guys' are situated, and you can ride up, and start to attack them if you feel like it. There are about 12 in total, giving you a chance to practice your combat skills if needed or to simply have some fun.
How on earth do you get around then? Well obviously since its the Wild West, not many cars are present so you stick to horses. Uhh... They come in a variety of colours and you can catch your own and break them in. In fact, there are certain ones which you can find in particular areas of the map which are much faster than the standard bred ones. Have fun catching them...but make sure you don't get thrown off when breaking one in. Quite embarrassing to say the least.
The combat is a cover and shoot type game, but with a spicy twist. The developers introduced a feature known as 'Dead Eye' which is activated by a certain button. When this is pressed, you enter slow motion and pick out your enemies easier. When you return to normal speed, Marston quickly takes care of the enemies/targets you have highlighted. However, your dead eye meter needs to refill, so you can't use it constantly. There are different levels of dead eye, which you acquire after doing certain in game challenges. Eventually you'll be able to shoot off your opponents hats without killing them. Awesome.
The game wouldn't feel real if there weren't certain Wild West clichés/symbols within the game. For example, random people throughout the world challenge you to a gun duel. This involves a tense stand off, where you rely upon your skills to blast your opponent when signalled. Furthermore, you can go treasure hunting! You get a map and then have to find the place it is showing and dig where X marks the spot. There's also the standard type saloons, with swinging doors, where you can rest or start a brawl. Your choice.
The soundtrack in Red Dead is one of a kind. Composed just for the game, it emphasises the Wild West theme. You might be walking in the wilderness on your horse, when the lonesome tones of a banjo kick in, or you might be in a middle of a fight when a whole orchestra adds to the action. A truly well played orchestra, it helps Red Dead to define itself.
There is also a surprisingly decent multiplayer feature, which adds to the experience. There are a number of game types, which force you to push your skill to the limit against other players. I honestly didn't play it as much (sorry) but could still see it was a great function of the game. This being said, I simply wanted to carry on with single player, but still managed to play multiplayer with my friends.
Red Dead Redemption offers a really long game. Like really long. For that reason I've probably missed out a couple of things here and there, but you can still see how unique the game is. I had many enjoyable adventures with Marston, from the barren West part of the map, to the luscious evergreen forest( there are bears.). Graphics are extremely detailed for an open world game, and combined with the amazing soundtrack provides a truly wonderful experience. Definitely worth buying, as it will keep you entertained for a while. Go and explore. Oh, and treasure the first time you get killed by a cougar. Its quite scary...
