Advantages: Good concept, fun combat system
Disadvantages: No replay Value, predictable, confusing
Just by looking at the front cover it sends chills down your spine, inserting the disc into your console is like walking into a dark empty room, you just quite don't know what's inside. I tried The Darkness and to begin with the story is good with a simple shooter basis, walking down the street beating to death any poor mobster who decided to look down the barrel of my gun. However the fun really starts when your character discovers he can manifest a creature from inside him that grows giant man eating tentacles out of his hips.
To me this sounded awesome, however after a while the game play value slowly drains away, I just knew half way through which corners I would be ambushed at and which were save points just by looking at the light round the corner. Its quite a predictable set of events that occur very randomly and mostly are to your advantage ironically.
This brings me onto certain perks you gain such as the void ability. *Cough cough overpowered* As soon as you get this its all you use to obliterate any poor guy to step in front of you and the difficulty of the game just depletes. Talking about difficulty you have an option to choose auto aim or not which is quite obvious as the game literally points to where you have to shoot defeating the object of having a turn function as simply the trigger is your best friend in the game. One major downfall which put me off playing for 3 months was that the game doesn't really tell you where to go in case you need reminding after helping that tramp for the third time let him play his harmonica in the subway station. This game really does leave you searching for the next part of the game if you wander off to help someone in some pointless side plot.
Multiplayer redeems the game with its various play styles and the ability to change form midfight which changes playing styles and strategies during fire fights online. The only problems with this are that it's laggy and you can only experience these half decent multiplayer matches if you can find a game to join.
All in all its quite a letdown and is only really worth buying for the insanely simple achievements to unlock. The darkness isn't as scary as it seems...
