Advantages: Good story, good twist on genre
Disadvantages: A little short
The Darkness for me was something of a surprise hit when it was first released. I wasn't expecting much from it, but became totally sucked into its excellent world. I played it again recently and nothing has been lost with time. It's a dark, very well crafted FPS with an excellent twist - the titular 'Darkness' which feeds our hero Jackie's dark powers, which include a scout creature which seperates from the character to learn about the world ahead, a black hole creator, powerful guns and perhaps the most satisfying of all, a demonic arm, which can be used for menial tasks such as lifting heavy objects, or more fun things such as impaling enemies and tossing them asunder. These extra powers make this so much more than just another shooter, and they work really well with the theme of the game, which centres around Jackie trying to exact revenge on a relative. This quest takes him through the dark underbelly of his hometown, and brings him into contact with members of the community who can help or hinder him. All in all, a stunning and very different shooter that is an absolute bargain at today's prices.
Summary: A great take on perhaps an otherwise stale genre. Great new gameplay mechanics make this a must have
