I'm a fan of shooter games but was not as excited about this as I should have been, I was put off by my experience with the previous Advanced War Fighter games. But after playing this for a week I can see its a amazing game with more complexity than just run about shooting everything like the Modern Warfare games.
You play a member of a spec ops unit in the near future. You get sent on various missions during the story which involve stealth, teamwork, vehicle moments and of course fire fights. There are only a few points where the game decides when to be stealthy or aggressive but other than that you can play how you like and the game will reward you with points depending on how well you do in either case. You have several gadgets to use like sensor grenades that find enemies, x-ray goggles that detect metal and flying or driving drones to recon the area as well as a impressive selection on weapons which can be fully customized in a great exploded view menu. There are also challenges during the campaign which unlock extra weapon mods if completed, if not there are still lots of options to choose from. The missions are varied with different features and take place in lots of environments to keep things interesting and it looks amazing. All the characters that direct your team to places tend to confuse the story which I thought got a bit lost. The AI isn't bad either although they mainly just help with sync shots and fire fights but only if directed.
The game also features co-op game play and online either co-op or versus. Co-op does make the game more fun as the team is smarter than the AI and improves the experience. I haven't played versus so I can't comment on that. Nor have I tried the Kinnect features but I understand its only the weapon mod menu.
Overall defiantly worth a look as a fan of shooters. Its in between the operation flashpoint games and Modern Warfare the open terrain and freedom of execution is a good feature MW lacks. The prices are down to about £20 already depending where you go so even for a filler game its good.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, one of the first franchises to really show what next gen could do with Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 and 2. However Future Soldier certainly isn't something to write home about (although it seems enough to write a review about).
Ghost Recon steps into the future with the almost standard world ending war on the horizon. You have all the gadgets and gizmos that are either around now or expected in the military, including an active camp system that only works when you're crouched, military cutbacks obviously taking effect in the gaming world.
The gameplay is fairly bland with nothing earth shatteringly new about it, you skip from fight zone to fight zone, usually starting with stealth until the people giving the orders seem like they've lost patience and allow all hell to break loose. Now I have only played on the hardest level but I can't say I have been overly challenged through the campaign, there are a few difficulty spikes which might take up a few more minutes but your AI teammates are actually living up to their "intelligence" label, one of the positives. They can be instructed to focus fire on targets in standard fights, or in stealth mode instructed to shoot multiple targets at once. Other than this there isn't anything special to report, you aim, you shoot and with a bit of luck you kill. Anyone who has played shooting games before will find this fairly normal.
The graphics are OK but not fantastic, there are a lot of fairly bland colours from the greys of the cities and yellows of the desert. The characters are quite blotchy in gameplay but do look quite good during the cut scenes.
For the sound there is an additional install for it, but a lot of the voice acting is poor and unbelievable and some of the background noises are often repeated.
I can't comment on the online aspects of the game as I haven't played it but given the lack of features, the fairly standard gameplay and graphics, if you are someone who will only buy one of this or Call of Duty Black Ops 2, which is also set to be based in the future. I personally feel COD would be the better option with the history of there games (and the few records that have come with them). For anyone else I think this is a secondhand purchase as will hold your attention for a few hours until something better comes along which it almost certainly will.
