Advantages: Good graphics, deep combat system

Disadvantages: Repetitive, poorly executed story

X-Blades is a hack and slash developed by Gaijin Entertainment for the Xbox 360.

The games story stars our very scantily clad heroine Ayumi, she discovers a map which leads to the treasure which unlocks dark powers and whoever finds them will be cursed, Ayumis story follows her discovering the curse and to either try and resist the darkness or embrace it. The premise of the story is actually very interesting yet the game leaves the story as somewhat of an after thought with any development of the plot taking place in an extremely short cutscene.

X-Blades has a fully featured combat system that is pretty deep, Ayumi is equipped with the titular X-Blades and those will be your main weapons though you will be able to use a variety of magic spells and guns to overcome your foes. Add to that an upgrade system with many upgrades for your weapons and magic abilities and you have an extremely competent hack and slash.

The enemies the game will send at you are often relentless and this is what lets X-Blades down, the sheer number of enemies you have to dispose of is monumental often because of enemy spawn points you will have to get rid of further into the level. The game basically has no tricks other than to swarm you with enemies and despite the competent combat system it just gets repetitive.

The game also has multiple endings depending on which side you choose to go down which is compelling but is let down because these ending sequences are so incredibly short.

Graphically the game goes for an anime look which suits the game well, enemy design is decent but you don't often get chance to admire them as you are too busy hacking them to pieces.

If you don't mind the repetitive nature of the game you probably will have some fun with X-Blades.

Summary: Good combat system but very repetitive.
