Described by the developers as "GUN PORN", Black easily lives up to this analogy and then some. At heart, a standard FPS, they've not attempting to do anything groundbreaking with regards to level design, control system of character abilities, but what they have done is to perfect the art of the FPS. The Guns: Extremely well rendered, you want to exhaust the magazine just to see them gleaming in the ultra slick reload animations. Occasionally you come across a game which you do not expect much from only to be plesantly surprised and this was very much the case with Black. Originally I rented this game but after my two days of playing I was hooked and ended up buying it. If you like a game to have lots of action and mayhem with lots of fire power and explosions a plenty then this game is worth checking out. Black is a sad example of a game that is all style, no substance, and it makes for a game that attempts to distract you with its lovely visuals long enough that you don't realise how painfully mediocre the cheap gameplay mechanics are. It struck up quite a lot of furore on release as the visuals were indeed quite a breakthrough at the time. The main flaw with the game is that it is firmly rooted in realistic mechanics, which don't mesh that well with the cartoon-ish world of first person shooters. This is quite easily my all time favourite first person shooter game. There is hardly any requirement for strategy, simply run in and annihilate enemies with a wide variety of weapons in a number of different environments. I would rate graphics quality as very good, each level is set in a completely different environment with upgraded weapons. Difficulty varies between easy normal hard and black ops. There are only a limited number of levels so you will find yourself wanting to complete the game on hard levels with less checkpoints, fewer healthpacks and harder enemies. As a great fan of first person shooter games I was looking forward to Black, unfortunately the game is a bit of a let down, the game itself is shallow, pretty short with only nine levels and not very well written, the action is slow and the missions are all pretty similar. The game is set in Eastern Europe and you play as Jack Kelar part of the CIA. The graphics though are very pretty and the level of detail is impressive they have tried to make the game cinematic and although not done to badly doing that forgot to make the game fun.
