Advantages: Great first impressions, good dialogue, and colourful graphics
Disadvantages: Not for young kids, sexual references that may be hard to explain.
Have you ever watched a movie and thought, "Wouldn't it be good just to let the bad guys win one?". I have, and this was my main reason for buying this game.
There are games that allow you to play as an alien, all be it, a good alien, or allow you to play as the bad guys as a small snippet of the plot. But "Destroy All Humans" lets you cause havoc and it feels really good to be able to vaporise a few stodgy policemen, or make cows fly through the air at the greatest of ease.
I picked this up, played it, the explanation of what you have to do is well dialogued and the controls are intuitive. The graphics are lovely, the main character, Cryptosperidian is a grey (not green) alien, with an enlarged cranium, and small fragile looking body. Everything that the movies has taught us an alien from another world will look like.
Missions are somewhat linear in nature, they consist of you either flying across the landscape in your flying saucer, destroying all manner of buildings and vehicles, or running along the ground in your little environmental suit, abducting, vaporising, or anal probing unsuspecting citizens. The reward from all the wanting destruction, is DNA, which can then be traded for better weaponry, or new skills that Crypto can learn.
There are a small variety of humans that you will come across in the game:
General citizens, you can read their thoughts, to find clues to the solution of the mission, or just extract their DNA and move on.
Authority figures like the police, military, and FBI agents, they have one thing on their minds, your destruction. Avoid, or vaporise with caution.
There are also, some non-human characters, chickens and cows. In fact, one of the skills Crypto can learn is to make something cause a distraction. I thought that getting humans to do the chicken dance was funny, but seeing a cow do it is bloody hilarious.
My personal thoughts are that younger kids shouldn't play this, there are a few very minor sexual references that may be hard to explain, but teens upwards should be able to play it no worries. My best advice, would be to visit Blockbuster or similar rental shop and try it yourself before letting the kids at it.
I bought this from Play for £30 when it was released, I suspect that you will be able to pick it up cheaper than that now, but the game itself is quite short, and there are no multi-player options so longevity may be an issue. It's great fun for a quick blast.
In summary, first time occurances of some events are extremely funny, like watching a well made comedy. Rent it, you might like it.
Summary: Like a spoof movie, the funny bits are very funny at the first viewing.
