Advantages: Great graphics, spooky atmosphere, its doom for pete's sake

Disadvantages: Very linear and straightforward, quite basic compared to other FPS games.

Doom 3 is basically a modern 3D remake of the old title, although a different story and set on a different location its basically the same sort of theme. This time around there’s been a little mishap or 2 on a research station on mars, and its your job to go and find some missing scientists, when everything goes a little wrong (enough of the story as I'll only spoil it).

Anyways down to the game, its a fantastic looking 3D FPS with some of the best lighting effects ever, some parts of the game are incredibly scary and if you are easily scare by fast paced games with violence, I wouldn't recommend it. It will have you splattering your pants in no time if you can't hold your nerve. But as far as FPS games go its pretty good, not as fast and frantic as the original doom was but it’s more realistic and certainly allot more atmospheric.

There's a mess range of weapons, ranging from shotguns, to assault rifles, to rocket launcher, plasma rifles and the BFG is in there somewhere. The only problem with this games is that there's no massive spider bots and know cyber demon, but there certainly is some big nasty pasties in there that will have you quaking in your doom marine boots.

One excellent feature of this game if the flash light, which helps light up dark patched in the game so you can clearly see your way and what’s in front of you but you can't hold a gun at the same time, so what do you do, bash things with your light and risk getting mauled instantly or grab your gun and just fire in the dark, the latter being safer, but the flash light lets you know what’s behind that door LOL..... But the lighting on the flash light is incredible and every now and again if you look closely you may see things enemies crawling downs walls or on the other side of windows scuttling around some set pieces are really great and either make you think 'wow', laugh or cry, depending on what type of person you are.

But along with excellent cut scene's and set pieces there's the addition of secrets still, and every now and again there even the berserk pack where you'll run around like a madman punching zombies and mashing them with one punch. Oh yeah the chainsaw makes a welcome return to and boy is it fun to get a zombie caught on the end of the blades, grind, grind splat, yummy. But the best thing about this edition of doom is easily the detail on the zombies, although just like basic enemies with no weapons they mope and drag along at a greatly slow pace but they look fantastic and sound great, making a nasty 'UGH' noise and dragging their feet, plus its great to see them blast back when you fill them full of bullets. Also what’s excellent is if you buy the collectors edition it comes with the original Ultimate Doom and Doom 2, which are great, sometimes I get more entertainment out of them rather than Doom 3, but I’m a massive doom fan, its quite simply for me the best game ever in my eye’s. And it will definitely stay that way and I mean the old original doom, but this new edition is also excellent, its no Halo beater, but its up there i would say beating only by Halo and Halo 2, if you looking for a scary game with violence and excellent atmosphere and graphics that will blow you away I would say 'buy this' as it is a piece of history technically.

Definitely worth it, but the only thing is by now unless you buy it second hand and I don't think many people will sell the collectors edition you would have to put up with the normal version, if you can get it though I would recommend paying extra or a little bit more for the collectors edition just because of the fact that it has the original doom which can also be played in multi player co-op which is an excellent edition if you like to play games with friends for entertainment. But it would be very hard to get hold of the special edition now, either way if you have doom for your PSX or PC don't worry, the normal version of Doom 3 is suffice and that’s the reason why I bought it I just thought I’ll pay the extra £5 - £10 and get the special edition for the 'HELL' of it.

Graphics 9/10: Immense lighting, create excellent atmosphere
Game play 8/10: Straight up intense and scary FPS action
Sound 9/10: Incredible sounds also add to the scary factor and atmosphere
Lifespan 8/10: Not huge but definitely worth it even just for the hell of it

Overall Summary: 9/10, definitely a killer title for the XBOX, if you’re an FPS fan buy this, well if you’re an FPS you should already have it, if not get it, unless you’re a coward and don’t like scary games, but anyway definitely an excellent buy.

Summary: Scarey, Dark, Dank, Atmospheric and god damn gr8.

The original Doom was set in a base on Mars too!

Review would benefit from a spell check before publishing and this was a pretty good game review.
