In 2002, remedy entertainment and 3D Realms released tis game. Its a crime thriller 3D shooter game, with a focus on the fim genre of crime noir. By this I mean that the plot is set along a central storyline , where the main character narrates at certain points in the film, i.e in this case cut scenes and actaully during pointsin the game itself. In addition the plotline is developed between film cut scenes and a graphic novel style. On release the game set out a new style of gaming in film noir. This genre has been developed to release games like Deus Ex, which uses the same noir style. Synopsis: You play Max Payne an NYPD detective on the hunt for the killers of his Son and Wife. The perps were homely thugs, high on a popular helocynegenic drug called Valkyr (or valkyrie). Max found them in the middel of their act, but was too late to stop them and you search the police files of your best friend and partner alex to find the killers. Your friend B.B asks you to meet Alex at a metro station and you begin a shoot out with mafia goons belonging to Jack Lupino, a local mafia boss. After trakcing Lupino and his russian dealers, thorugh valkyr drug factories and mafia strongholds, you find out that valkyr is the product of a US military project caled Valhalla. The idea being that the drug gave soldiers a greater tenancy to fight and greater strength and stamina. But in most patients the drug produced insanity inducing helucnations. So with the project stopped the developer Aesir stood to lose cash and so they restarted producing the drug in order to sell it on the streets due to its hedonistic effects and serious addiction factor. Paynes wife worked for Aesir and found out the truth that would threaten to company so the CEO had hired the thugs to kill her. You later find that B.B was part of the conspiracy and had killed alex. After killing him, a secret US government society called the inner circle, tip you off about the CEO of Aesir and where to find her. You assault the companies headquaters, but Horne the CEO escapes and the NYPD arrest you, this is where the game starts. Gameplay The controls are relatively easy to get used to,and the gameplay is really smooth. The best feature is obviously 'bullet time' a matrix style slow mo cam that allows the players movement to be faster then those around him and use this advantage to dodge, shoot back and generally jump thorugh the air. Now games like red dead redemption use variants of this feature called 'dead eye targeting'. Weapons When you first start you have just a semi automatic pistol, but you get better guns as you go through the levels, to snipers rifles and shotguns etc. The best thing about the sniper rifle is that when you fire a bullet, you can get bullet cam, that follows the bulet all the way to the target. The levels and difficulty You fight in the subway, the valkyr factories, bank vaults etc. You can also set different difficulty levels to an extremely hard level, such as survival mode, where its almost like reality, two shots and you dead. There is even a level where you are drugged and you have to get thorugh an induced subconscience level with some very disturbing things going on, like babies crying. All in all, its a fantastic game to play, great characters, very atmospheric, especially the constant night and the snowfall. The plot is great if a little complicated, but it really sucks you in.
It's very rare these days to find a game or movie that doesn't come across as being over the top American in presentation and plotline. The new A Team movie is a great example of a great series being dumbed down by big explosions and special effects and lacking any substance. Video games can suffer from the same effect, although usually it's not too bad since games are made for this sort of action to occur! While a heavy action game with a variety of outlandish scenes, Max Payne is a serious attempt at making a mystery game. The plot is gripping and filled with good characters and horrific events that a movie would find hard to create. You play as the titular character Max who returns home one day to find my newborn baby and wife butchered by several men who are high on a brand new drug. You take control of him primarily three years later when a lead finally appears on this new drug and you're sent to investigate undercover. When your friend (and the only person who knows you're undercover) winds up dead, you're forced to evade the police as you go deeper into the conspiracy and unearth mistakes of the past; things that were best left buried. The graphics are pretty average in-game although still perfectly capable of creating the mood and environment needed for this neo-noir tale. The trump card of the game is the storyboard cut scenes which detail what occurs between levels and key events. These are incredibly gritty looking and reflect the nature of the story. Several of these are actually disturbing to look at - one features a deranged clown which morphs into a guard who has been beating Max while tied to a chair. Vivid stuff. The game is also similarly graphic in places. While not featuring much blood, Max occasionally has deranged nightmares of the night his wife and child were killed, which occur in empty black rooms with blood on all the floors. It's incredibly emotive and you actually are scared of what might happen as you progress in these levels. The voice acting for the game is top notch, especially the part of Max played by James McCaffrey who really imbues his character with a rather conflicted desire for revenge with a desire to be tried for all the people he has killed. He isn't your typical action star, he's human, and what's what makes this game tick so well. The rest of the cast are equally of a high standard and help to make Payne's world instantly believable and tangible. The controls are reasonably easy to get a hang of but are clunky in places and it can grate at times. The game also takes a good while to complete - I'd be surprised if you complete this in less than 30 hours. The game is big due to the intricate plotline and you really get sucked in from the get go. There isn't really a point where you feel you're drifting off and losing the plot. There is a sense of restraint here, even among all the big shootouts that occur throughout. What can I say about this excellent game? Don't be fooled by the graphics, this game is a excellent piece of video gaming nirvana; although strictly for adults as the majority of scenes are far too disturbing for children. Heck I'm 19 and I'm disturbed by some of these scenes. The world Max Payne lives in is one where there is no sunshine and no hope. And Take 2 have made this turn into an excellent piece of storytelling - good on you!
Max Payne is an action game for the Playstation 2 developed by Rockstar Games, the creators of Grand Theft Auto. Max is a police man and one day he returns home from work and finds his wife and daughter murdered and he is framed for these murders too. It couldn't be worse for Max as he journeys to find out who did this to him and clear his name. The story is told through comic book storyboards which are gritty and fit in with the character very well, it's also really compelling and you will want to find out what happens to Max. The gameplay is standard third person action but with some really great tweaks, Max can pick up a variety of weaponry, dual pistols, machine guns, shotguns, grenades. All of these weapons are satisfying to use against the games various enemies. The game does use a health system which can get annoying if you are used to regenerating health but Max can carry pills around with him to top up his health at any time. Max Paynes party piece is no doubt the games bullet time mode, equip your dual pistols, turn on bullet time and leap through the air while firing with pinpoint accuracy and you feel like you're in a John Woo movie! These are Max Paynes most satisfying moments and you will relish each moment that bullet time is active. That said the game is pretty tough at points and bullet time really is needed to give you the edge. Graphics are not really a strong point here, even for a Playstation 2 game. The voiceover however is top quality and immerses you in the games gritty story. This is a great action title with a good story, you really must experience Max Payne!
Max Payne is a now classic PS2 game that plays as a third-person shooter and is one of my favourite console games of all time. Recently made into a film starring Mark Walbherg to very mixed reviews, the game sees you playing the part of a cop who returns home to discover his wife and child brutally killed by junkies in what is essentially a flashback and preliminary level of the game. Following his family's death, he transfers to the DEA and goes undercover in order to prosecute the people responsible for the manufacture and distribution of the drugs that created his wife and child's killers. Three years pass and, just as Payne is getting close to the mob who push the drug, something goes wrong, he is betrayed and becomes wanted by both the mob who know now he is a cop and the police who suspect him in the death of one of his own. Payne has top take the law into his own hands to prove his innocence and take vengeance against those who have done him wrong...... The game was unique for bringing to the console the concept of "bullet-time" as seen in the Matrix movies; "bullet-time" is earned each time you kill a bad guy and enables you to slow down time during battle leading to all manner of slow-mo dives in the midst of gun-play and some truly spectacular battles. There is an end of the world theme with many of the characters and locations seemingly obsessed with this theme. One location for example is called Ragnorak which in the viking era was considered to be the end-time. There is also a very surreal element as seen in dream-sequences instigated by a drug overdose in which you re-visit a horrorific nightmare vision of your family's death scene. In some locations, a television can be turned on which airs both a mock soap or a twisted serial in the ilk of The Prisoner which features a talking flamingo and is very trippy and quite freaky to listen to as you pass through rooms in a building. In fact the whole game is extremely eerie and spooky in places and has a real acid-trip feel at times. There are different difficulty levels that get progressively harder to near-impossible standards and a survival mode which is equallly hard. In later levels, it becomes not just about shooting and surviving but also about navigating laser-beam traps and avoiding trip-wires lending an added level of tension to an already heavily-laden game! It is a game that works on many levels and is a true masterpeice of gaming to play. The first time I played it I actually didn't like it as the controls take a little getting used to- on the PS2 this is because you have to use both joysticks- but once you get the hang of it, it is actually quite smooth. Graphics are a little dated in places now but still this remains one of the best games available on the PS2!! It truly is an oldie but a goodie! A sequel was made which was not quite as good and woefully shorter and there is heavy rumour of a third in current production for next generation consoles. So who knows maybe this is not the last we will see of this classic character.....but then they have been talking of a Duke Nukem next gen game for quite a while too with no sign yet so I won't hold my breath. Until then when I need my Max Payne fix, it'll be back to this and good old fashioned Matrix "bullet-time"!!
Flashback to 2001, less than a year after the launch of the PlayStation2 and a crucial time in determining how successful Sonys next-generation console may ultimately become. But Sony had a bit of a problem on their hands, and it lay in the shoot em up genre. Blasters had for a long-time been a favourite amongst gamers, but despite solid PC-ports of older classics Unreal Tournament and Quake III, the PS2 still didnt really have a shoot em up to turn heads and shift consoles would Max Payne come to Sonys rescue? Rescue is perhaps too strong a word, though Max Payne certainly had the desired effect as far as the gaming public were concerned, breathing new life into a stagnating genre, setting things up nicely for the likes of Timesplitters 2, Medal Of Honor: Frontline and Killzone to continue the good work later on. A third-person (above and behind the player) shoot em up, Max Payne (MP) is produced by 3D Realms the more gaming-savvy among you may remember them for Duke Nukem 3D. Similarities are obvious charismatic, wise-cracking lead characters; a mighty array of weapons; lively music and the now-customary trawl through a seedy strip-club to name but a few. But things have changed a fair bit since the Dukes hey-day back in the mid-nineties, and Max Payne is an altogether darker, more serious and grittier affair. What is perhaps most strikingly unusual for a shoot em up of this type is the emphasis on storyline. The opening level is a terrific, playable prologue that takes place three years before the main bulk of the game, seeing Max, a trenchcoat-wearing New York cop, returning home to a nightmare his wife and child have been murdered. Fast-forward to within two days of the present, and his former detective-partner Alex is gunned-down before his eyes in a deserted subway. That, as they say, was the last straw. News and radio reports appear to suggest that Max Payne is (wrongly) suspected of the killing, and so with the police in pursuit, he begins a personal crusade to purge the city of all the big-time criminals that have wronged him in the past, as well as finding out the truth behind the slaying of his family. MP mixes tried-and-tested shoot em up elements with a film-noir atmosphere and some inspired gameplay tricks, to near-excellent effect. The adventure is split into many chapters (short level-sections), most of which opening with a brief but clever graphic-novel style cut-out, concisely summing up the scene. This, combined with Maxs near-endless supply of dark witticisms and the ominous, dingy setting means youll quickly find yourself becoming engrossed in the criminal underworld, and from the get-go Max Payne is addictive stuff. MP sets its stall somewhere between a detective story and an action-thriller; whilst the plot and characters are vividly depicted and examined in the cut-scenes, its the guns that do the talking as far as gameplay is concerned. There is just a dash of exploration thrown in for good measure, whereby the odd secret area may yield some painkillers (for health) and ammunition, whilst the very occasional puzzle (if they can be described as such) requires little more than a tap of the X button to press a switch or pull a leaver. Everything in MP seems to have been designed with a view to keeping the pace and tempo high; controls and movement are brisk, responsive and pleasantly simple whilst the levels themselves are almost always short, sharp and explosive and its absolutely gripping as a result. Regardless of whether youre sneaking around a deserted New York subway, charging all-guns-blazing through a crime lords manor-house or leaping roof-to-roof across the snow-covered city skyline, the gameplay in essence remains relatively simple and rarely deviates greatly. Its all about the combat; as with most games of this ilk a squeeze of the R1 button will deliver a blast from your selected weapon, though Max Paynes main innovation comes in the form of its Matrix-esque bullet-time. Max can perform a slow-motion dive with the help of L1 and a chosen direction, whilst L2 slows the action down so you can actually see and dodge travelling bullets. Its a sound concept and it all looks rather snazzy thanks to a cool blurring effect; those who loved The Matrix will find it to be a real perk and its great fun to play around with, though in practice bullet-time is difficult to master to the degree whereby its use could be considered a clear advantage to the player; dives dont last long and though you have greater time to aim than if you simply charged straight in, weapons take longer to fire and if you dont take out all your targets quickly, you may find yourself in a rather vulnerable position after the dive finishes. Still, the addition of bullet-time adds a fair amount to the games cool factor and there are no real technical problems with the system. To further reduce the sense of repetition, there is the occasional break in the shooting, with the emergence of some nifty sections that serve either to supplement the plot or simply inject a little more variety into the proceedings. Theres no denying that Max Paynes main strength lies in its fire-fights and it never pretends to be anything other than a shoot em up, but the interludes in the action are generally really well-designed, from the surreal and disarming flashbacks Max has of the fated night he found his wife and child murdered, to a brief stealth section and outrunning the flames in a burning restaurant, its all fun and well-crafted stuff on the developers part. The parts all fit together to form a very nice overall package. Like Duke Nukem before it MP sports a ridiculously large arsenal of weapons, ranging from the classic Dual-Berretta pistols setup, to Ingram machine-guns, double-barrelled shotguns, sniper rifles and grenade-guns each naturally carrying its own pros and cons. It has a top-class storyline with some genuinely menacing foes (quite rare in shoot em ups these days), an accessible and pleasantly smooth control method and also some surprisingly well-judged humour nearby enemies can be heard having comical conversations, ranging from I hate being stereotyped as a cold-blooded killer. Im really a nice family guy to discussions about which colour of wire needs to be cut to defuse a bomb and what the best ending to a film is this kind of dark humour is used sparingly and seems perfectly suitable. On the whole its top fun, but no game is perfect and inevitably Max Payne is not without its problems either. Whilst it is understandable that some of the tougher sections will require a few attempts to master, it seems something of an oversight on the developers part that in-game cut-scenes cannot be skipped, meaning you may have to watch the same ones over and over should you die a few times. Whilst the A.I. on the whole isnt too shabby, the real technical concern is that, despite levels often being extremely short (the adventure is split into well over sixty sub-sections), the PS2 really struggles at times fight more than a couple of enemies at once and the frame-rate suddenly becomes extremely jerky, which makes for one form of slow-motion that certainly isnt welcome! Visually, MP fairs moderately well thanks to some top-notch presentation, as well as superbly-designed and highly atmospheric playing environments that fit the story like a glove. Character animation lets it down quite a bit though sadly, with unimpressive-looking enemy gang-members whose odd movement isnt much better than their levels of detail perhaps the fact that it was a PC-conversion meant that it all looked ever so slightly dated on release. The Max Payne character suffers from square-head and joints syndrome that I was convinced died away with the early Syphon Filter games, plus he manages to sport a remarkably constipated look throughout. Ouch! The sheer volume of levels contained within the game tend to belie the fact that it is not lengthy by any stretch of the imagination and can be finished off in just a few days play. The more positive news is that the difficulty setting is self-adjusting, which is a bit of genius as it can allow novice players to work their way into things, and those who become engrossed early on are more than likely to want to play the game through to completion. For Max Payne aficionados, there are three additional game-scenarios to attempt following completion including Hard-Boiled, which is simply a tougher version of the normal game, and New York Minute, which challenges you to complete levels with a minute timer counting down, that can be topped up slightly by killing enemies, though this is something that only the real experts should sink their teeth into, I think. Its a 15 certificate and this is because of all the fun you can have with a baseball bat and various guns blood is used in fairly ample supply though nothing overly graphic such as the decapitation of limbs and so forth, plus given the more-adult nature of the storyline, expect the odd naughty word to appear here and there in cut-scenes. Would kids like it anyway? Well, they probably would is the truthful answer and despite the odd tricky part popping up from time to time; all things considered its a pretty accessible game by shoot em up standards, and the numerous save-points keep frustration levels to a minimum, with the aforementioned bullet-time sure to impress those new (and not so new) to gaming. Max Paynes widespread popularity on both PC and PS2 formats suggest that you dont have to be a hardcore gamer to enjoy it. Overall, Max Payne is bags of fun. It tests your trigger-finger a lot more than your brainpower, and may just prove the antidote required for those who have become frustrated by slow, frustrating stealth adventures that, in terms of enjoyment, shoot themselves in the foot in their attempts to make a game more realistic than fun. Its certainly not the best shoot em up available now, and the lack of a multiplayer mode may deter some, but if you are after a stylish, plot-driven one-player blaster then there are few that can match it on the PlayStation2.
I think it’s safe to say that Max Payne is one of the most atmospheric games I’ve ever played. Set in a cold, dark and rather grim world Max Payne employs a whole new approach to gaming. This isn’t just your average shooter, this is a game that you’ll never forget and that’s a guarantee. Max Payne is essentially story based although the gameplay is nothing short of revolutionary. The game starts with Max standing on top of a skyscraper holding a sniper rifle and looking rather pleased with himself. At first you think; what's going on here then. Then you realise its going to be one of those stories in which the character recalls the past and you have to play through it. You are taken to Max’s house a few years before. It’s a normal day, you go into your house, everything is fine. Then you realise that something’s a bit wrong. Furniture has been thrown about the room, there is a mysterious mark on the wall and the phone’s ringing. You hear noises from upstairs and you run towards them. The screams of your wife and child echo throughout the house. You can’t reach them. First you find your baby lying motionless beside the fallen cot. After capping the bad guys you continue towards your bedroom. You burst in only to find drugged up gangster laughing at your wife’s corpse. From here you are plunged into a world of undercover policing, Mafia gangs and corporations bent on making vast sums of money in any way possible. Max is torn up from his loss and he’s determined to find out who is responsible and anyone who tries to get in his way will soon end up with a bullet in their head. Graphics The graphics on Max Payne are probably average for a ps2 game these days. It certainly doesn’t rival Metal Gear Solid 2 or Final Fantasy in this category. The environments are well detailed but not very interactive. They sometimes look a bit flat but most of t he time the urban setting combined with underground laboratories and shipyards never ceases to amaze. The characters, on the other hand, aren’t as impressive especially Max. The first time you catch a glimpse of his face you’ll have to laugh as he looks more like a cop in need of an urgent trip to the toilet rather than a cop in need of revenge. His coat fluttering in the wind looks surprisingly good though. The enemies are fairly well done but for the most part you’ll be too bust ducking and diving to get a good look at them. The frame rate sometimes changes in a rather noticeable fashion but that’s quite rare and not a major problem. Overall the game is very colourful and atmospheric in terms of graphics. Outside there tends to be a lot of grays and whites but once you get inside everything changes. Instead of the snow stricken roads and buildings you get to see a completely different side to Max Payne, the whites and grays are replaced by reds and yellows and the whole game looks polished and nicely done. 16/20 Sound The sound effects in Max Payne are absolutely amazing! Everything from footsteps through to gunshots are perfection. Never have I heard gunshots so realistic even when you go into bullet time they’re brilliant. Even the soft crunch of snow as you walk through the icy streets is nothing short of groundbreaking. However, the music isn’t quite as impressive as the sound effects. It’s very repetitive and sometimes out of place. Generally it compliments the storyline quite well but there are a few minor niggles which should have been sorted out. The music could have been more upbeat in places and more atmospheric rather than just the repetitive beats that the game contains. Despite this Max Payne still sounds great and the pros outweigh the cons by far. Even the sound of a hookers bed vibrating is perfect and with that in mind near perfect marks a re in order. 18/20 Gameplay Max Payne really does bring the gamer into a different world and the bullet time feature is a perfect example of this. In most shooters you get to do the same old thing; run, shoot, get hit, run, jump, shoot, get hit. Well Max Payne alters that trend to such a degree that it almost makes the game worth buying just for the bullet time feature. In Max Payne you can literally manipulate time to your advantage. You can use this to dodge bullets, execute matrix style dives while firing off your twin Uzi’s and take out multiple enemies in just a few seconds. Basically you can move in slow motion and aim you weapons in real time making it not only easy to win fights but also extremely cool to experiment with. There are two degrees to which you can use this function; bullet time which is when you dive and shoot and slow mo which is when you dodge bullets more effectively; this slows time down much more than in bullet time. Now this feature isn’t unlimited; there’s a bar which goes down every time you use the function. The only way to up the bar is to kill more enemies. So if your bar is depleted you’ll find yourself in the middle of a deadly firefight in which you have to use sheer muscle and power to defeat your enemies. Max Payne is split up into three different sections each with its own individual charm and perks. Max Payne’s story is told in quite a unique way. It uses drawings and pictures rather than cutscenes in an attempt to make the game fast paced but it doesn’t work particularly well. It’s a bit of a love hate thing really. During the sections you encounter nightmares that you have to play through. They’re quite disturbing in a way and very repetitive. In fact the whole of the first chapter is repetitive, once the charm of diving around in slow motion has worn off you find yourself a little bored. Well don’t fear because this all chan ges in the second and third chapters where you’ll get more weapons, different enemies to fight and more variety in environments. In the first chapter you’ll have to be content with pistols and shotguns for the most part but in the other two chapters you’ll have access to loads of different weapons including machine guns, grenade launchers and sniper rifles. Throughout Max Payne you’ll be shocked and amazed by the incredible and revolutionary gameplay. It’s nothing short of a masterpiece and once you’re past the first chapter you’ll definitely agree otherwise maybe you should see the doctor and get that dillusion sorted out once and for all. There are also some interesting characters to meet in Max Payne, these include Don Punchinello, Mona, Jack Lupino and the strange women who is responsible for the drug which killed Max’s family. Max Payne has a general feeling of futility which means you’ll feel great when you’ve completed it. The controls are simple and easy to get to grips with and all in all the gameplay is almost perfect, almost. 23/25 Lifespan This is an average game in terms of length. If you play it non stop you’ll probably get it done over the weekend and there’s no real replay factor once you’ve done it. It couldn’t really have been much longer when you think about it though, there was nothing else to put into it. If they had decided to make it longer it would seem to drawn out and people would get board so its probably about the right size for a story based game. Some extra features after completion of the actual game might have been nice though. Perhaps some extra missions which took place while Max was a policeman. Just something to add to the overall lifespan really would have helped. Unfortunately Take Two didn’t come up with anything for the ps2 version so we’re stuck with the m ain story and nothing else. Mind you, considering the quality of the game, it’s not really a big deal. 19/25 Originality Well what can I say? I don’t think there’s ever been a game quite so original. The bullet time, the way the story is told and the general atmosphere of the game make Max Payne highly original. Perhaps bullet time was nicked from the matrix; well not perhaps more like definitely! However, the fact that its never been done by a game before makes this obsolete. If you’re looking for an original game to get your teeth into then look no further because you have it right here. This is a real gem and even the most critical and cynical of games journalists couldn’t call Max Payne unoriginal. 10/10 Overall Overall this is a great game and, despite some minor faults, it seems to have panned out very well. Problem is no one seems to be able to keep Max still. He always seems to want to dive around everywhere. If the doorbell rang he’s probably execute a 360 degree dive all guns blazing before finding out he just capped the delivery boy. He must have a lot of bruises by now; it must be very painful diving around everywhere. I’m definitely looking forward to Max Payne 2 and if you haven’t already got this beauty then I’d definitely advise you to go out and get it! 86%
Hvae you seen the Matrix? of course you have, and this is the gaming equivalent of that film, complete with slow-motion John Woo-style shoot outs and a narrative to match that of the great Washowski brothers. "Life was good," says Max in the intro sequence. "Sun setting on a sweet summer's day. SSmeall of freshly mowed lawns. Sounds of children playing. A house across the river on the Jersey side. The American Dream come true. But dreams have a nasty habit of going bad when you're not laooking." And dreams dont get much worsethean coming home from a day on the beat to find your wife and kids slaughtered, before singing up for an undercover Mafia Job, getting framed for murderand having everyone on your tail. Nothing to lose indeed. The proprietary MAX-FX engine is looking as good as it should after four years of development, and everything you see is there for you to destroy. Shoot a window and the glass explodes, leaving a few shards with you can then take out at your leisure. Realism is the key. All the decals are different depnding on what material you are shooting at. We've got metalic sparks off the metal surfaces, smoke puffs off brick walls, even splinters out of the wooden sufaces The game plays in third person, but developer Remedy is hoping to bypass any of the usual problems by utilising a feature it calls Bullet Time. Using this you can slow down th action to dodge bullets and perform acrobatic gun-blazing somerfaults that Keanu and co need wires for. It also boasts self adjusting skill levels ( forget about choosing to play as easy, medium or hard) that can monitor wether you're a hordcore gamer or a no-hoping lamer. All of which brings us to the only slight reservation I have with the game Max Payne offers about ten hours of quality play for the average hardcore gamer. Taking hardcore as hardcore I would probably estimate around 15 hours of pure cinematic acoitn fo r and average gamer.
If your dream game is to be playing in a story as a Undercover cop in New York, then Max Payne otherwise you'll be taking part in one of the most enjoyable action adventures around. The story starts with you witnessing your wife and daughter being murdered. This was an interesting start to the game which puts you right into the story from the start. This starts your journey for revenge. As you start the game you will notice how brilliant the bullet time and sound is. For the first twenty minutes you'll be sitting in front of my television with a sence of amazement. To go along with the great bullet time the L2 button controls Max's special ability which for a moment puts everying thing in slow motion. This special ability is extremley important and takes some getting used to but once you get it down it will help you throughout the game. The controls are straight forward. Your fingers will not be touching the square, circle, triangle, or x, button much but mostly using the top four buttons which controls your gun and your special ability. The analog stick is a must as it makes the game flow much more smoothly. Max Payne is a shooting game which makes the weapons even more important. The weapons are normal guns which help the realistic view of Max Payne. You will use weapons like pistols, machine gun, shotguns, sniper rifles, and more. A great thing about Max is he has space for as many weapons as you can get, but always keep an eye on your ammo because a lot of times you will run out. Max can be killed easily. A gernade will most likley do the trick or a shotgun bullet to the head. So you must always be aware and keep your eye out for anyone. If you are shot any where else you will be fine. When you are nearing death it is imperative to keep your eye out for the lockers and cabinets to make sure you check them all, because the aspirin is critical. The asprin could save you from dying, and it is worth looking f or. For a game with such action the loading times really start to annoy you when the story starts to unravel. The loading times are what really seperate max payne from a good game to a great game. As you finish a part of a chapter or the whole chapter your game will also be delayed by the game automattically saving. This is not a good but also not a bad thing. It relieves you of forgetting to save but it also slows the game down and saves and points where you don't want to save. So at times you might be forced to go back. At some points of the game you decide your own destiny, at others you'll watch it happen. The cut scences vary from you watching Max walk around and interact or other times where you watch at a comic strip. Some of the cut scenes are better then the others. The comic strips are a little odd because they don't show exactly what is going on. I believe that these comic cut scences takes something out of the game. I think if they would have stuck with the normal cut sceenes it would have helped the game overall. Overall the game is good. The legnth of the game isn't great it should take you anywhere from 15-20 hours which isn't great for an action game. The loading times hurt the game but it is still a wonderful action packed game with a very interesting story. Max Payne won't be a must have but it is a must try

I bought this game yesterday, its great i spent all day on it!! If your a fan of John Woo and Chow yun fat then ‘Max Payne’ is for you. The story is of a usual format-’Your family gets killed, you get framed and now your on the run’ but instead of playing out the story as you go along, the whole game is past tense. As you walk along occasionally Max will narrate on that particular part of the story, or give you some information on what he remembers from that position in the game. Rather than having long boring movies, as the plot goes along comic strips pop up to illustrate what is happening. Now for the action, at first i found Max difficult to control because you have to use both analog sticks at once, but when you have got the nack of it the game begins to take you over. Never seen before (well by me anyway) in a game there is something called bullet time. When activated ‘Bullet Time’ slows down the action of the game so you have more time to dodge incoming attacks, you can also use this as an offence tactic. You can dive in any direction during Bullet Time, whilst in the air you can aim and look in any direction this enables you to clear out a room of multiple enemies which would seem impossible in normal speed. Diving is fun, you can dive over tables, chairs and even through doors for a more effective entry. You rarely see such excellent graphics in a fast paced ‘Shoot em up’, Max Payne pulls it of fantasticully, using real faces on the characters and the attention to detail is terrific. Although the plot is quite sleazy i would recommend this game to anyone!! Parents beware!! This game portrays an adult only story which ofen contains bad language and sexual depictations. 100%
Max Payne is the one of best and newest games on the PS2 scene. It is a shoot them up game created by R Renedy and published by R Star And the winner of the Basta Entertainment Award 2001. It will have you jumping out of your seat with the vibration function and your thumb swelling from fast reacting. Max Payne was a normal cop in New York City when one day he returned to his perfect house with a white picket fence to see his perfect family, BUT something was wrong the door was knocked down and the syringe was spray painted on the wall which was the sign for one of the worst gangs in the city. So the first stage of the game is to kill all the gang members in his house and find his family. Eventually he gets to his wife who was lying on their bed DEAD. Then everything changes for the street cop. He goes undercover to try and get revenge for what the gang has done to him. There is one person who knows that he is a cop undercover and he is ALEX. Alex decides to meet Max to discuss there next move when they find them selves bang in the middle of one of the biggest gang robberies the city has ever seen. Eventually Max finds Alex .But when they are talking a mysterious figure creeps up behind Alex and shoots him in the back. Now no-one knows of Max’s undercover assignment. But they see Max running away from the crime scene and now that his cover is blown, the cops are after him and so are the Mafia, he has got nothing left. HE IS A MAN WITH A LOT OF GUNS AND NOTHING TO LOSE SEEKING REVENGE. Basically the game goes on from there Max always being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The graphics in this game have to be the best I have ever seen, the picture is really sharp. In the game you can go into matrix style for a certain amount of time and kill people in slow motion (classy) you see the bullets whizzing through the air. You can dive left, right, forwards, backwards and all in matrix style. There are a l ot of guns to get from shotguns, sawn off shotguns, to pistols, double pistols ect. There are time out periods during the game when another part of the story is revealed to you as Max comes up to a problem. You maybe wondering why he is called Max PAYNE that is because he solely relies on pain killers which you find in the medical cupboards. The game takes an extremely long time to do but once you’ve started you can’t get off, you’re hooked. Of course there are disadvantages to the game such as there is only 1 player, which is unfortunate seeing it would be awesome if it was multiplayer. Also it takes a really long time which is good and bad, good because it doesn’t take a week to complete and bad because it takes too long, but to stop you getting bored it is conveniently split up into chapters. There are quite a few shoot them ups on the scene at the moment such as 007 agent under fire, Time splitters, time crises 2, but personally I think it leaves them in the dust. You should definitely buy it!
There’s a famous scene in When Harry Met Sally that goes something a bit like this: “Yes, yes, yes, yes, oh God, yes, yes, YES!” And that was exactly how I felt just a few short minutes into Max Payne on the PC. Only I wasn’t faking it. You see, though I’ve raved about such titles as Black & White and Severance: Blade of Darkness in the past, nothing I’ve played to date could possibly prepare me for the greatness that is Max Payne. Undoubtedly destined to change the face of computer gaming, the jaw-dropping Max Payne sees you thrust into a film noir-style action storyline, with seedy hotels, drug-addict prostitutes, and your own murdered family filling out the gritty plot. "There’s few times in your life you’ll feel as cool as you do the first time you come diving sideways through a doorway, two Berettas in your hands, bullets rippling by you in slo-mo..." You are Max Payne, a cop undercover in the Mafia who has been framed for the murder of the head of the DEA. What’s worse, the Mafia now know you’re a cop, too, so you’ve got both the cops and the robbers after your gravely-voiced, leather-jacket wearing, gun-toting, sorry ass. As Max himself explains in one of his brilliantly written narrative monologues, “It’d be stupid not to leave town and not look back.” A mafia hotel explodes in a fireball behind him, before the unflinching cop adds: “I guess you can call me stupid.” It’s brilliantly cinematic scenes such as this one – told through a combination of animated cut scene and hand-painted graphic novel-style comic strips – which make Max Payne one of the best presented games ever. Presentation’s all very well, of course, but pointless if the game itself stinks of poo. Fortunately, Max Payne is spring fresh and fragrant. In order for you to get to grips with the control system, youR 17;re given the option of playing a training level, which sees you running, Dirty Harry-style, from phone box to phone box, with each ringing telephone giving you a handy gameplay hint when you pick it up. Sometimes the hints are of the “press Return to use an item” variety, while other times they’re more up the “look out, you’re about to have company” street, dished out shortly before a gang of machine-gun toting maniacs charge round the corner. And it’s in just such a firefight that Max Payne excels. The first game ever to use “bullet time”, Max Payne, with just a simple click of the right mouse button, allows you to slow the action right down, Matrix-style, in order to give you a fighting chance in a room full of enemies. There’s few times in your life you’ll feel as cool as you do the first time you come diving sideways through a doorway, two Berettas in your hands, bullets rippling by you in slo-mo as you pick off villains left right and centre, dropping half a dozen of them before you hit the floor. It’s an absolutely fantastic idea, and works better than I’m sure developers Remedy even dared hope. While major gameplay devices such as this are what make the game good, it’s the fine details that make it great. You can hide from the enemies and listen as they have full conversations about anything under the sun, you can turn TVs on and off and catch snippets of programmes (about three levels into the game you have a full guns blazing shoot-out as a tremendously funny spoof period drama plays on the TV in the background), and you can even buy drinks from the vending machines. What’s more, baddies’ mobile phones play an assortment of tunes, such as The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and in one great comic touch, you come across a dead body, a stake wedged in his back, and the not quite finished killer’s name, “Buff” scrawled in blood on the flo or. Visually superior to anything ever seen on any format, and with a distinct noir style all of its own, Max Payne feels less like a game as it does a monumental gaming event. I promise you, you’ll never be able to look at another title without comparing it to this one. Recommended, then? Yes, yes, yes, oh God, yes!
This is a port of the very sucessful PC game to the Playstation2. I never did play the original due to my PC running slower than a dead tortoise. So I came to the PS2 version without any of the baggage of people who had already played it. I had heard about the slow mo effects and the good storyline but that was all. What this game is is a solid arcade shooter/adventure game with some neat touches (bullet-time) which are fun for a while but then become a little tiresome. The game itself is supposed to respond to your gaming skills (ie. If you play well then the game gets harder). I didn't really notice this and I did finish it within a week of playing. All in all a good game with some neat touches but not a stayer.
Max Payne is, to put it simply, superb. The game revolves around a detailed storyline that gets you engrossed within the action of the game, so much so that you will find it difficult to put down because you will want to find out what the next twist in the plot is going to be. The producers of Max Payne have made it so that the difficulty of the game changes as you play it, this means that, if you are struggling then the game will change to make it easier for you(easier to kill enemies etc.) and vice versa. It is easy to recognise the numerous film quotes and scenes, whether it is the never before seen gaming version of Bullet-time (The Matrix) or the Scarface like mansion in the later stages of the game. The only thing that i would consider to be bad about the game is that it can be finished fairly quickly, but even then, new types of games are unlocked so the gaming can continue.
Max Payne is a game with a very adult theme to it, arguably more adult than Grand Theft Auto 3 yet it is only rated 15. Max Payne was originally released on the PC where it was a massive hit and it is set to be a hit on the PS2 as well. Max Payne includes drugs, hookers, violence, gambling, and swearing, in short this is a strictly adult game. Wouldn't it be great if a great gangster game was released to compliment all the great gangster films? It is now! GRAPHICS From the heart pounding beginning till the very end Max Payne is visually one of the most impressive games on the PS2. Max Payne concentrates on everything, it will look at the most basic of structures and put them in true 3D and it will turn the simplest things into works of art. As this is a gangster based game with drugs, casinos, alcohol, sex and the whole shebang it isn't a great shock to see cigarettes in ash trays, Max Payne beautifully shows the smoke coming off the end of the cigarette in a corner, the yellow smoke discolouring the ceiling. Bricks have been carefully put together, as have cars, buildings, and household objects. Max Payne himself is a site to behold; his leather jacket is crinkled and done to such a high degree of accuracy that you can almost smell the leather, his stubble is accurately created, each hair is in place (it never moves even when being shot in the head, perhaps something to consider for the next gangster game), and a serious of character lines are on his face. Sex then - the gamer gets to witness beds vibrating up and down in a brothel (in one case there is a man splattered in blood lying there as the bed vibrates up and down), scantily clad women are plastered on the walls, and a few other treats and references to the subject. Violence then - there is plenty of violence in this game, as you will find out. When disposing of gangsters you have a vast array of weapons at your disposal, however you take them out there is bound to be buck ets full of blood - excellent! Fancy throwing a grenade? Visually the explosion of a grenade is spectacular not to mention the effects it can do, and that's just to the surroundings! This game is one of the bloodiest games available, it is on par with GTA3 if not surpassing it and violence is on a much larger scale. The weapons that Payne gets to use don't look bad either although it is comical how he holds that bat! It would only be too good to be true if there weren't some graphical errors or glitches and as with all games there is an error! When getting too close to a wall a part of your body may go through it, a problem that gamers will only be too accustomed with in action games, it's annoying but it doesn't happen very often and with the overall look of the game you can forgive Max Payne for one slight hiccup. Max Payne is one big cinematic experience; it has great effects such as "shoot-dodge" and "bullet time". Shoot-dodge makes the gamer feel as if they are in a film, you can dive forward or to a side and shoot when you are in the air. Think of a typical gangster film, you are behind a pillar and your enemy is in front of it, with a pillar in between the two of you it doesn't take a genius to work out that neither of you are going to hurt the other one. With shoot-dodge you can jump out from behind the pillar to the side and shoot while side jumping to the ground. Then there is bullet time; this is even better than shoot-dodge. If you are finding it hard to shoot somebody or you just want to add a cinematic feel to the game you can use bullet time, bullet time will enable the action to slow down all except for you, this means that there bullets will inevitably go slower but yours will go at the same speed, this means that many enemies will eat much lead will bullet time is activated. Although bullet time and shoot dodge are great features as with all good things they come at a cost, you have a bar so use it wisely! 18/20 GAMEPLAY It's all very well looking the bees knees but if it doesn't play well then Max Payne is like polishing a turd - it will look nice but it wont be any good! Luckily for the gamer Max Payne is not like polishing a turd at all, it plays like a dream. With shoot-dodge and bullet time (mentioned above) the game does actually feel dangerously realistic. Max Payne is a bad ass and he isn't going to bow down for anybody, as Max Payne you attack anything that attacks you or looks threatening. You get to choose from weapons varying from a baseball bat and crowbar to a shotgun and Uzi's. Depending on who you are facing depends on which weapon is best to use, if you want to jump out from around a corner and kill one man the shotgun is the best weapon, if you want to break a lock the crowbar is the best weapon, and if you want to take out multiple people at the same time the Uzi is the best weapon. Max Payne can do a selection of things, he can activate switches, jump, roll, shoot and run at a lightning like pace. Max Payne is a fully interactive game meaning you can take advantage of objects around you. You can turn the TV on (usually you will find you are wanted by the NYPD - doh!), turn on taps, flush toilets, and call elevators among other things. Max Payne is a narrative game, Payne is telling the story and looking back on the events, this is vaguely reminiscent of In Cold Blood for the original PSONE but that is where the resemblance ends. Payne will tell the story through action, and through speech. When there is an important part that the game wants the gamer to notice it will do one of two things; it will either cut to an FMV with speech or it will cut to a comic book style speech (this is surprisingly good). Max Payne will not try to scare you like Silent Hill, and it wont try to give you the impression that you are a secret agent of spy like Metal Gear Solid will but what it will do is give you a damn good game (something that both Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid give you). Max Payne will meet a variety of people, some nice and some nasty. Whilst wondering around the gamer will see druggies, these druggies are possessed and intimidating usually muttering, "I'm going to die, this is not real". When faced with a druggie you can either ignore the druggie or shoot him for your pleasure, it really is up to you. If you do decide to shoot the druggie though beware…if there are fellow druggies near at the time of the shooting then they will be after you, and if you think a gang of criminals after you is bad then you think how bad it gets when we add druggies into the equation as well. There is the odd occasion when you will meet somebody who will help you, for example in the train station when Max Payne requires a password for a door he finds an assistant (whatever you do don't shoot the helpful people because if you do you are quite simply screwed). It is possible to listen in to conversations from gangsters who are looking out for you, usually they will say "he is going to bust in here any minute" or other phrases along those lines but sometimes you will get some really weird conversations, for example in one instance two guards are talking about vampire movies and eating Eskimos (this is a messed up world)! When you are injured like on Resident Evil your character will look injured, limping from place to place (and if you can't tell how he is walking then there is a handy health bar in the left hand corner of the screen). The problem with most games with a great concept is that the AI leaves the game looking more than a little shallow. Amazingly AI is where Max Payne excels (AI is artificial intelligence for all of those who didn't know). The enemies in Max Payne will rush around corners, roll out of your way, run to find mates to take you on and generally keep you on your feet. The enemies a re almost as skilful as you meaning that every encounter is tough, you must be quick on your feet and tactful or you will go down…hard! Max Payne will keep you playing throughout, some may call it repetitive considering the fact that you are just killing all the time, but most will call it innovative because of the great storyline to back it up, whatever you call it you can guarantee that this game is fun. 23/25 SOUND Sound is almost as important as graphics in Max Payne as you really have to listen out and know what is going on in your surroundings. If you keep your wits about you and listen you can usually succeed against the enemy, whether they are talking, throwing a grenade or walking closer it is important to listen carefully. If there is a phone ringing or the fuzz of a TV signal you can find it judging on how loud sound is i.e. how near you are to the object. When interacting with objects the interaction is; visual interaction, sound interaction, or (usually) a combination of the two; this means that you will be treated to the sound of running water, the flush of a toilet and the hum of an electric bed bumping up and down. Amplified gunshots and shouting is usually what's heard when in the middle of a gun fight, enemies will shout commands to there comrades concerning Max Payne whether they are ordering them to stay back or come forward and fight in numbers. When in a narrative part of Max Payne you will hear the gruff deep voice of Max Payne accompanied by sinister music that you will get used to and appreciate throughout the duration of the game. Sound helps to tell the story and is a lot more useful than one would initially believe, if you played Max Payne with no sound it would be an average title because the message simply wouldn't be put across (despite subtitles). 18/20 LIFESPAN Due to highly intelligent AI and an extensive plot Max Payne will last you an incredibly long time for an action game of its ilk. Max Payne is split up into 3 parts with chapters in each part. Although you could complete Max Payne the first time in say 3 days at a push you will just keep coming back to it again and again mainly for the incredible special effects and sheer blood in the game. Max Payne is the PS2's finest action game available and will therefore be a title you keep coming back to. 18/20 ORIGINALITY Although there have been adult games (GTA3), action games (Syphon Filter), and games with a lot of blood (Resident Evil), there has never been a game quite like Max Payne. This is the first true gangster game and because of the hiding and cinematic effects it also has a James Bond feel to it at times. The storyline is fairly unique as it is looking back on the events and the use of shoot-dodge is a first for the PS2. Considering how long action games have been about Max Payne has added one hell of a lot of things in that haven't been seen before. Max Payne mixes the successful old bits of action games with the innovative new bits of action games giving the gamer a thrilling experience. 9/10 OVERALL Max Payne is the ultimate cinematic gangster game; it is not for the feint hearted. Max Payne plays like a dream and mixes extreme violence and mature subjects with an intelligent storyline. 91%
