Disadvantages: Some new features suck, Skateboarding can be annoying
This review is about Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, I will be giving information about all the new features in this game, and what new stuff you can get. The aim of this game is to stop the Big Shell from blowing up, that’s if you are doing Raiden's (one of the main characters) story, and if you are doing Snake's (another main character) story, then you have to stop the Metal Gear from going under control by Ocelot (this bad western person, who’s really Liquid Snake, Liquid Snake is the bad guy in the first MGS).
The new features in the game are VR Missions, which I will give information about first. There are many things that you can do in the VR Mission Mode, there is 1st person shooting, and then there are target shooting, sneaking missions, ones with no radar, and you’re in first person, which is really hard. When you complete a level with one of them, you will get a percentage go up, depending which character you are. When you get 50% for you character, depending which one, you will get another costume for him. So say you were Raiden, and you got 50%, you get Ninja Raiden, which you can do in VR Missions.
The VR Missions are very fun to do; they get really hard when you get further into the levels. For the shooting target ones, you get to pick a weapon you wish to train with, and then you have 5 levels to do for each weapon, which brings your percentage up once done any levels. The ones I like are the pistol, and the AK74, which is really good. There are other weapons like Explosives, and rocket launchers, grenades. They all have there own different type of missions, which can be hard, or easy, depending what you use. The sneaking missions are hard, what you have to do is that your not allowed to get caught by any guards, and when you get further into the levels, you will have to dodge camera's and loads of other things as well. This is the ultimate training for the main mode of Metal Gear Solid. When you keep doing this, you will get your percentage up, and you will be getting much better at the game. Keep it up, and soon you will be a master of sneaking around.
The first person mode is hard, it’s like Rainbow Six 3, you only see your gun, and what’s in front of you. You need to get to your target, without dying, believe me, it is very hard. It’s best not to do this mode before you do the sneaking mode, because you need to know how to sneak, and shoot good, without just wasting you bullets on the wall, as you can't aim very well. When you do decide to do this, then you will have to dodge cameras, while you won't be able to see the camera, until you come right up to it. Watch out for loads of guards as well, but when you get good at this mode, you will have loads of fun with it. There are other functions you can do accept VR Missions, which is skateboarding. You can be Snake, or Raiden, depending which one you pick is the Strut you skate on. You have loads of missions to do within skateboarding, like get so many points, to get a tick by that mission, then you will have others like, grind 15 metres or something’s like that, and then destroy so many things and other stuff, it is really hard, but yet really fun. Once you have done this, depending which character you are, like say you were Raiden, once completed you will get another costume for him. If you were Snake, you will get Dinner Jacket Snake for winning that skateboarding.
There is another function too, which is Snake Tales, when you are Snake, and you do other missions. Like Big Shell Evil, you are Pliskin (Snake pretending to be Navy Seal), going around the Big Shell (Big Shell is this plant in the sea, without any land near it), and doing loads of missions. Like mini 1 player modes, there are some more, I think there are 6 altogether, and they are very hard, only the top notch players should do this. Have fun on this mode though, I have only got round to completing the Big Shell Evil level.
The playability of the game is great, you can be doing loads of the VR missions, and have as much fun as you possibly can. The game is quite addictive, as hardcore fans of the Metal Gear Solid people know. You can play this for loads of hours and on end. The game is very original, not many games are like this, accept Splinter Cell now, but Metal Gear Solid is the game that started this all. The game graphics are superb, it is great, it all looks so smooth, not jolty, and it looks real.
The music in the game is good, especially the Skateboarding music, which is a remix of the Metal Gear Solid theme. You can find midis and MP3's of this, from any site, just search for it. The voices are good, all done in English, which is how I like it, you can ask for a different language in option mode, but it will only be in subtitle, and they will still speak in English. The sound effects are good, with the shooting, the seagulls annoying people, soldiers sneezing, it’s just great. The game is very difficult, you will need a lot of patience, as it is a thinking mans game, not just a game where you go out guns blazing, you will need to keep hold of you ammo, and not waste it. The game is worth its money, its around £10 - £30 nowadays, as its still quite a new game, you can get it for PS2, Gamecube and XBOX, even the PC, which is good.
I think that this game is very good, not as good as it could have been. It has loads of new features like VR Missions, Skateboarding and even Snake Tales, which is very enjoyable. Have fun with this game, and don’t get bored if you get stuck. I will give this game a 3 star, as it could of been much better, but it is better than most, and I know more games that are better then this one.
