Base is a large chain of hostels operating across Australia and New Zealand. I've stayed in a couple across Australia and also heard a few stories about the ones in New Zealand and from what I have experienced and heard, they tend to be more on the wildside!
Magnetic Island is based 8km's off of the Queensland city of Townsville, famous for its wildlife park (which makes up 54% of the island), fishing and the population of koala's on the island. Its a beautiful and quiet island and is a perfect respite when travelling up the East Coast particularly as many people, like myself had just been on the more hardcore Fraser Island and Whitsunday trips.
Base Magnetic Island is in a slightly isolated location on the island which I guess suits the locals and backpackers to some extent. When I first walked on to the hostel site I was immediately impressed, it looks far more like a hotel resort than an atypical hostel. The hostel has a large bar, a swimming pool, access to a private beach and nice areas to relax and socialise in. The bar runs events/ socials every evening with things like ladies night, pub quiz and goon pong amongst these. Unfortunately I missed the full moon party due to dates, but people told me it was good - although nothing like the real thing!!
The island is great for exploring although is not really good if you are a swimmer due to the jelly fish that inhabit the water! Me and three friends hired a pick up truck, when we arrived to pick it up we were amazed that it was only 6 months old and had all the mod cons. Everybody else seems to hire these little pink jeeps that couldn't go off road, where as our pick up could. Some of the beaches are only accessible with four wheel drive so we got to see everywhere. On the island I would recommend visiting the isolated beaches as you will literally be the only people there and the koala sanctuary/ wildlife park was very good. Other than that and the resort there is not much to do, but it is plenty for 3 or 4 days on the island.
The only downside to Base was the rooms. They can only be described as tin sheds, which in a tropical environment is horrible. I think we may have got a raw deal as there are some wooden ones which were meant to be better but I can't say for sure. To be fair it isn't too expensive with the 3 nights costing $90 odd including ferry ticket. Hiring a car wasn't too bad between four of us, at $100, I just guess it depends on your budget.
All in all an excellent place that I would highly recommend for anyone doing the East Coast. Enjoy...
Base is the home of the Australian Full Moon Party.
Base is a chain of hostels and this one is located on Magnetic Island. It isnt your typical hostel, with a huge open air bar located right on Nelly Bay beach. Some accomodation is in the form of cabins although they are located on the main road so can be noisy.
Accomodation starts with packages for $92 for 2 days and nights, including snorkel hire and a welcome drink.
We go out to Base far too much, it is my favourite place on the island to go out. They play good loud music, you can request songs you want and the drinks are reasonably priced.
The best night of the month is the Full Moon Party which is tonight. It is at the end of every month, and costs $20 on the door to get in. They have good djs playing both local and national. Its the only night of the month where Base is open past 12pm, its open until 5am on these nights.
There are loads of decorations, loads of dancing, drink offers, fancy dress, and although its supposed to not be as good as thailand it is a great night and locals get in for free!
The staff at Base are mostly friendly and fun, they employ backpackers so if you are looking for short term work you can clean or work on the bar there and have a great time!
