A great base for a trip to New York (Big Apple Hostel)

We stayed at the Big Apple Hostel for 12 nights in Oct 2007 and intend to stay there again next time we go to New York! We had a private room which had TV, air conditioning and a safe; both the room and the bathrooms were basic but clean and functional. Bear in mind that this is all you need because in NY you'll spend very little time in your room anyway - literally just somewhere to sleep and store your belongings!

There are about 6 floors in the building (maybe more) but there are 2 lifts so its no problem. They also have a room you can store your luggage on the day you depart.

The price was about £60 per night which is expensive for a hostel but cheap for New York, especially considering the location. Its in West 45th St and 5th Ave so is just off Times Square and is a perfect central location. Its close to the subways and loads of restaurants. Theres also a bank across the road where you can exchange travellers cheques. Its a safe area and not too noisy at night.

Theres a small kitchen which we didn't use but it looked clean. There's a wonderful deli next door where you can go for breakfast - a HUGE selection of food, really cheap and quick. There is a laundry in the basement of the hostel which if I remember was cheap, and the machines were easy to use.

We found some of the staff to be a bit abrupt but helpful. Our favourite receptionist was a guy called Tony who always had time for a chat and was really helpful and pleasant.

Summary: The perfect place to stay in New York - central, cheap, clean and quiet. All you need!
