New York probably has the most expensive hostels in the world to stay in, coupled with all the other costs of the Big Apple you can easily burn $250…. $300 dollars here a week.
We stayed in Chelsea which is a great central location near to Manhattan village and Soho where the big Uni is with all the cheap eats and bars that cater for it.
The further uptown you go the cheaper the dorm and room space although as soon as you pass Central Park on a hundredth street the districts dissolve away into Harlem and the Bronx so you don’t want to be staying there folks. Harlem has a cool hostel for $15 a night in the trendy safer area of the borough near to the Park although white faces can never be guaranteed an easy ride here.
The Chelsea international hostel was the only one with space because we didn’t book ahead, May June is busy and gets really choker when the hoards of Au pairs and Nannies spend their two week parole period going crazy and filling any available capacity in the city.
At $23 a dorm bed (15 pounds) a night you are right in the action and pretty a safe area but for some reason (Probably noise) they have a court yard 10 PM curfew every night so you all have to retreat to the kitchen and common room area for a good p**ss up or your sweaty dorm if your not heading out to party.
Theres a nice TV room with two Internet pay as you go terminals for e-mail and tons of magazines and flyers for the cities things to do and infinite night life opportunities with free tea, coffee and breakfast, err well toast that is, available in the pokey kitchen area.
Sadly the reception area is crap with little access to staff and info so you are kind left to get on with it until your strict check out time for the silly $10 key deposit return.
Easy to get to from the Metro and buses although the tube stations can be tricky to carry luggage and heavy rucksacks. Its pretty safe down there to in the daytime with lots of rail cops milling a
round so for a dollar anywhere in the city you can’t miss.
The Banana backpackers and the Jazz house near Times square seem to be party central so that means no sleep and lots of beer if that’s your thing.IF you need a hand to get around the hostel im sure the Roaches will oblige.
