Chelsea International Hostel has a brilliant location in the heart of the Chelsea district of NY. Facilities are rather basic - $27 for a dorm bed (6 person dorm), $30 if it's air conditioned, and $65 for a shoebox-like private room (sleeps 2). It's fairly clean, although from what I've seen, the guy's rooms are a little rougher. Bathroom's are usually shared between several dorm rooms, although the second time I stayed there I had a girls dorm with a private shower/bathroom off the room, just for the six of us - bliss! For a youth hostel, that's fancy. If you have a choice of rooms, you might want to try and get one like that. Small lockers are available inside each room for free - bring your own padlock. For larger bags, they do have a baggage room, but most people just lock up their valuables, and dump their stuff by the bed. I haven't had a problem there with theft. There's a kitchen, laundry facilities, and an open courtyard as well. As youth hostels go, it's a little expensive, but as New York goes, it's cheap - and what a location. Located on 20th Street between 7th and 8th avenues, (and across the road from a police station), it's a five minute walk from 23rd Street Station, and 1 minute walk to several restaurants. The homophobic should stay well away - Chelsea is one of New York's gay districts and couples will openly hang over one another. I guess that might bother some people - I think it's cute. On the other hand, if you do swing that way, it's a great place to stay, as there is some good nightlife around - much of it guys-only. My only gripe is that the check-in office is only open from 8am to 9pm - a problem if you have an early flight. A very basic hostel, but a great location pretty much in the centre of NY.

I stayed in the chelsea hostel last September , it's it a good area- near to the subway and you can walk there from the various bus station when you get in from the airport. It's bit like a tardis in that it's deceptively large, loads of small rooms off the street and four town houses with around 12 beds on each floor. Generally you are in a room of four- basic but with a decent sized locker, bedrooms for two are available if you book quite a bit in advance!. For the cautious amongst you it's dead opposite a police station so you can have fun watching NYPD go about their business, generally going to the doughnut shop and back... It's at 251 West 20th Street, really near to the Chelsea Hotel where Sid Vicious shot Nancy- there's a cinema just oposite there which could be a good first night to acclimatise (if you are on your own that is). They also have left luggage facilities which is pretty essential sometimes Great Location- and most importantly bookable on line! It's at http://www.chelseahostel.com/
