I booked three nights in a 'double room with private bathroom' in September 2010 for the marathon weekend as my husband was running. The website description and the promise of a double en suite for around 44 euros a night seemed good value and the location was ideal.
On arrival utter chaos was going on in the lobby, the layout is not ideal with a narrow passageway in which you can stand in front of the desk (but which was full of suitcases) opposite a seating area. A large group of Italian marthon runners had arrived and were being very slowly checked in. Eventually we were given a key to our room on the 4th floor of building 3.
There are no lifts in the blocks of rooms (or at least there were not any in ours and they all seemed identical). It was a MASSIVE hike to get to our room on the 4th floor and would leave even the fittest person out of breath, so just be warned if you have anyone in your group with mobility problems.
When we reached the giddy heights of our room we were surprised to find we had been given a whole maisonette dorm with two bunks on the one floor and another 4 beds on the floor above. Furniture was suitable for a school group perhaps but was hardly the double room we had booked and were expecting. Due to the crowds in reception we decided to lump it as all we wanted was a place to sleep, needless to say I was not entirely happy about it though.
The room was tired, shabby, the sink had a large chunk missing out of it and three of the four lights round the bathroom mirror were broken. None of the lamps in the room worked, even when you could locate a plug, so the room was always dark. There was a kitchenette but no crockery to use in it. I felt a little insecure knowing there was also a door to our room on the floor above via the mezzanine level and as a result did not sleep very well.
Plus points - the beds actually were comfortable, linen was clean and the breakfast was excellent and plentiful, also the shower always had hot water (although the catch was broken so you had to hold it above your head). The location is ideal for getting in and out of the centre on the U-bahn and trams.
This is very, very basic accomodation so you really do get what you pay for. Oh yes, and on our final day we opened the door to our room to find an absolutely ginormous pile of dirty bed linen had been piled outside it, almost blocking our exit, fire hazard or what!?
Personally I would not stay here again and would pay more to stay somewhere nicer. As an aside, the picture above this review shows one of the garden areas in between the blocks of rooms, these do feature seating areas and might be quite nice in summer, the down side is that noise from within them carries up to the rooms and they do tend to be a popular meeting point for groups of guests - which this place seems to specialise in accomodating.
