Advantages: cheap, friendly, not rowdy, good showers!

Gulliver's House is a hostel my friend and I found by chance in Rome. It is located on Via Palermo, quite close to the Termini Station, but not so close as to still be in the 'dodgy' immediate vicinity of the station.

It is just off the Via Nazionale, which buses run up and down very frequently, and it isn't too far from the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia.

As for the hostel itself, there are a couple of 12 bedded dorms and one double room. There's no real communal area, apart from the area by reception where there are some comfy chairs, and a tea/coffee/water machine.

The shower is really good, which is a definite bonus in a hostel. When we were there, there was a good mixture of nationalities, Americans, Germans, Italians from elsewhere in Italy, Japanese, and everyone was friendly. It wasn't just 'young' people either.

There isn't a kitchen, but you can put things in their fridge if you ask.

The owners were very helpful and speak English, Spanish and Italian (obviously, being italian!). They know the areas and were good about advising places to go or not go.

They also have a really cute, extremely fluffy dog. I'm not sure what breed it is, but it's like a big white fluffy ball!
They also got us all some pastries on Sunday for breakfast (but usually breakfast isn't included.. I'm not sure if this was an 'every sunday' thing or just because they felt like it!).

They also have some arrangement with a local restaurant to do a cheaper set meal if you are staying at the hostel. We went there one night and it was very authentic!!

There is a curfew of, I can't remember exactly, but I think 2am, but if you tell them in advance that you want to be back later, then they will make sure you get in! (by staying up to let you in!).

#39;s from midday until 4pm, when they clean the place up and have a bit of a break!

It was really very quiet and civilised for a hostel, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to stay cheaply in Rome. It cost 25,000 lire a night (which is about £8), although the double room costs more. There is an internet connection which you can pay for to check your email, but I don't know how much it cost because I never did this.
