I stayed at this hostel during the New Year 2000 celebrations and I have to say that it is very good for the budget traveller. I booked in the June before I went, due to the time of year but I saw people turning up just after Christmas able to get beds. I managed to get a private bedroom by paying extra but this still didn't cost more than 20 pounds a night. A night in the dormitorys was around $12 if I remember correctly but don't quote me on that, best to phone them and check. The staff at the hostel are very cosmopolitan which means that at least one person there can speak the language of most of the guests there. They have a good gift shop that also sells tickets for major attractions, such as the Empire State Building etc which can cut out the need for long queuing which can happen at some of the more popular sites. They have a canteen and a communal kitchen if you want to prepare your own food. They also have a cafe if you want to relax at the hostel. Be aware though, if you are a smoker, that they have a strict no-smoking policy, in-fact New York is a smoker un-friendly city. One of the great features of this hostel is that they have local volunteers that come in and help by telling you about things that you can do, that you may not have thought of and some of the volunteers run their own excursions. They are particular helpful about telling you where to avoid so that you can stay safe. If you do stay, find out the bus and subway routes. Its too far to walk to downtown Manhattan (about 35 mins) especially at night, and the taxis can be expensive. I would certainly recommend this place if you are on a budget.
I have stayed there for a total of 5 nights. From start, we enjoyed our stay there. Security is good. We dont have to ever worried about leaving our bagpacks in the dormitory. The hostel is divided into rooms, single sex. Each room can accommodate about 8-10 people. An interesting experience to stay in hostels is that you get to meet other fellow backpackers. The location of the hostel is close to the main city centre. You can actually walk there and back. It's actually not that far, it will take about 30 minutes of slow walk. Price is cheap as well. It is affortable when you compare to other accommodation in New York. Next time when you do visit New York, do give it a try.
