I've stayed in about 20 hostels in europe bu this is by far the best! I stayed for 1 week in summer 2001. There is a bar, TV, pool table, metal lockers located in the room (free!) and a laundry service across the road. Prices are very reasonable at about £12 a night. The staff are very laid back but have a high level of customer service. It's mostly students and lone backpackers but you'll meet loads of interesting people because it's always busy (in the summer st least). I'd reccomend booking about a week in advance - they have a website http://www.globetrotterhostel.de/ where you can look at pictures and book your rooms. The rooms/dorms are beautifully decorated with local artists designing the decor. There's high speed internet acess so you can book you next hostel before you leave and the Berlin wall is a 5 min walk away. There's an all-you-can-eat breakfast for about a pound and the food is excellent. Downstairs there's another bar and locals and travellers usually come into the hostel bar at night to drink, but they're so friendly, you'll have a great time. This is truly the best youth hostel you'll ever visit and it costs no more than you'd expect. You won't be dissapointed!
I stopped in this hostel for two nights, and I have to say that I have absolutely no hesitation in recomending it. This has to be the best hostel there is. Everyone I met in the hostel said it was by far and away the best hostel they had stopped in and that is no exageration. The hostel is 4 bus stops from the Ostbahnhoff station in Berlin. It takes around 5 minutes. The buses leave outside the main station. The stop is Grunberger Street. The hostel itself has around 30 rooms, they range from single rooms to 10 bed dorms. I stopped in a 6 bed dorm which was a mixed dorm. I paid 28DM per night, thats around 9GBP. They supply the sheets for 5DM deposit, which is returnable when you leave. The beds are comfy, there is a free locker for all your things and there are plenty of showers to go around for everyone. Downstairs in the hostel lobby there is a bar, where you can buy beer or wine. There are jugs of water and milk on the counter which are free to help yourself. A bottle of beer is 3DM, that's about 90p. There is also a pool table, a tv room which has a table football game in it. Downstairs again is the hostel restraunt which is very good and very reasonable. You can get anything from tradsitional German sausages to a plate of pasta. The hostel aso has an all you can eat breakfast for 6DM which runs till 1:00pm and has bread, cheese, jams, cereals, fruit and a drink of juice. You can help yourself to as much as you like. There is also an english speaking walking tour that leaves the hostel at 9:15 every morning for 15DM. Brewers Best of Berlin walk goes everywhere, it covers all the main tourist attractions and alot more. You get a history of Germany, Berlin, the war and all of the problems associated with that. This is worth every penny as the walk lasts till 7:30pm. You have to book a bed in advance as it gets booked out but it is worth phoning up as it's a great hostel. Tel no. 0
