Disadvantages: SECURITY

Cape Town like South Africa’s hostels on the whole are really rather good. The currency is weak so value is guaranteed, between 3-6 pounds a night for a dorm to 50r (fiver) each a double.
You can party out at The Hip Hop for a little less rand (noisy and obnoxious) and I mean party or if you prefer a quieter but fun stay try St Johns Waterfront hotel which I’m bias to as I worked there for six months offers tons of dorm space and triples and doubles also theres reasonable hotel rooms for a little more privacy in a separate annex.
Its near to The Waterfront complex (400 meters) down in the fishing port of the city which is a sea of themed restaurants and bars with nice expensive shops for the more affluent traveler. Its considered the safest tourist area in Southern Africa over seen by the majestic Table Mountain.Bar the occasional terrorist attacks on the Planet Hollywood Its an Oasis away from the everyday hassles and petty crime sadly the norm in Africa.
St johns have a cool bar open until 1am with coffee and brekkie available after hard nights partying.Fresh linen is free everyday and theres lots of grass and space to lay out with two, yes two clean swimming pools to take in Southern Africa’s emaculate climate.
Sadly such is the nature of crime down here the hostel is gated behind bars like most here although it doesn’t inconvenience you. Reception offers lots of in house deals on day trips, Stellenbosch wine tasting and Kloofing to name but two. Kloofing is kinda like Orienteering with beer and hotdogs bit of a laugh for six notes.
The hostel is close to the city center, some quarter of a mile and a bus ride from the better beaches. Sea point to the left has some nice restaurants and a knackered blatant fake Hard Rock Café with some gay bars for the local gay population. The city bars to the right on the main highway at night are not the safest although a seasoned traveler will know the score here.
Theres definitel
y an over capacity of cheap hostels and hotels in Cape Town spread superbly around the city so theres abundance of prices and gimmicks to claw you in. Newlands has some tidy ones near the foot of Table Mountain, with the uni close by its safe with lots of rustic streets and student eateries and cheap p***s ups. Beautiful City and you can live well for little expenditure.
