Advantages: clean, Decent bar, free Brekkie
Disadvantages: An Expensive option but its Amsterdam so its worth paying a bit more for
Finding somewhere cheap to stay in Amsterdam was probably one of the hardest parts of my around the world trip. I stayed in a hostel called Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark. I stayed here a couple of nights ago whilst on my backpack adventure around Europe. We booked the Hostel for around Euro45 (which at the time was around £30) from the excellent Hostel world website. This chain has 48 hostels in Holland alone.
We choose this hostel as it had received excellent ratings from numerous people who have stayed there, and we were not disappointed. We stayed in a clean dorm that could sleep 8 people. This had a private bathroom for only these 8 people. But you can book a wide variety of rooms for this hostel. In total there were two different showers and toilets which meant that you never had to wait long to get in the shower in the morning.
The hostel offered a big locker in the room for each bed and also offered a more secure storage area for things like your passport and vital rail tickets. This cost Euro2 for 24 hours.
The hostel had a very niced sized bar which offered good food and drink at very reasonable prices. Although I didn't eat here I can say that it looked nice as some people sat opposite us in the bar were tucking into a nice big burger whilst we enjoyed a local tipple of beer. The bar had happy hour every evening from 1900 to 2100 which gave even cheaper drinks. There was also a pool table and Internet access which was quite pricey in comparison to other hostels around Europe.
The hostel is quite central to Amsterdam, but is just far enough away to not be noisy from the busy city center. The hostel overlooked a nice park and hence allowed quite a scenic view out of the window.
Within the price of the room, breakfast is included. This was a nice selection of meats, Cheese, Cereals and cakes. You could also choose Fruit Juice and Teas and Coffees. The rang oe teas was excellent and my girlfriend was delighted to find Earl Grey as an option. Here we saw many European families tucking into their breakfast showing how family friendly this hostel is.
Amsterdam is a vibrant city that just feels happy. It has many pubs overlooking squares whilst it has many canals running through it. Of course there is also the many famous cafes within the city. We can also say that Amsterdam had an excellent range of food available to suit all needs.
In hindsight I don't feel we spent enough time here as the welcome from the off to the end of our stay was very good and we will definatley go back sometime soon.
Looking back on my European hostel experience this is probably one of the best we stayed at.
Summary: A better then okay stay
