Firstly, this may be a matter of confusion for the traveller as Spanish classifications are a little different and allow more variation. There are hotels, then hostales or pensiones, and then the youth hostels named "Albergues Joveniles" During a recent visit I stayed in a hostal very close to the Plaza Mayor, (Hostal Cruz Sol, Plaza Santa Cruz) in this area every where you look there are small hostels and hotels, which often occupy only one floor of the large 5-6 storey buildings that form the historic and tourist centre of Madrid.
